A Perfect Circle – Judith Lyrics 22 years ago
Ok i think this song is about Maynards mum who was called Judith. Maybe she is a follower of religion and Maynard cant see why. He is saying you love god and yet what has he done for you? Given you only pain?. He said it was about somone who doesent know its about them thats why i think it may be about his mother.

Tool – Lateralus Lyrics 22 years ago
Ok bare with me here this is a bit weird I don’t know if anyone has already touched on this with their explanation if they have sorry for posting it again.

After the first few times of listening to this song it reminded me a lot of a book I read called Bewilderness by Palyne Gaenir.

This book goes on to explain The Rainbow of the soul and this to me seems to have a lot to do with this song.

In the song the opening lines “Black then white are all I see in my infancy
Red and yellow then came to be, reaching out to me, let's me see”

To me these lines symbolise the Rainbow of the soul.
In the book it describes the soul as a rainbow, like each colour representing a different level of reality E.g.: Yellow is the Mental aspect of reality and red represents the Physical part of your existence.

So with the opening lines I think Maynard is saying you are born with a clean slate Black and White then your notions of Thinking and Felling then come to you making you seen and feel in a different light.

Now in the book it describes your level of physical reality as a line that goes across the rainbow. The line is a wavy line almost like a sine wave the top of the line and the bottom of the line cross all the plains of the rainbow. The full rainbow in total represents your full self or your soul. This means by manipulating the “line of Physical reality” you can be open to anything that there is in the world that being what you can and cannot see.

This seems to explain to me the next part of the song.

“As below, so above and beyond, I imagine
Drawn beyond the lines of reason
Push the envelope, watch it bend

Over thinking, over analyzing, separate the body from the mind
Withering my intuition, missing opportunities and I must
Feed my will to feel my moment, drawing way outside the lines”

And in the book it even says and I quote “The bottom and top loop-ends of the sine wave should be considered infinite in both directions. And there are many of those rainbows above and below "ours."

That’s not far away from the actual words in the song.

So I think the song is about using your mind to go to every part of the soul at once then bringing everything together. So that you can exist in both the Physical and Mental worlds at the same time.

The spiral bit of the song reminds me of the paintings by Alex Grey who done the cover art for the album. In the painting’s he represents the path of the soul as a spiral. So in this song I think Maynard is saying follow your soul and you “may just go where no one's been”.

Ok I know what I mean lol but it’s hard to explain it all.
