This song was recorded in October 04. One month before the election. I think he is singing about how the news glorifies criminal behavior by publicizing all the murders, car chases, and all the bad things people do. I also believe he is commenting on the publics reaction to all this stuff. 20 years ago the public would have been outraged by all the rapes, child kidnapping, and even a shootout resulting in a death on live TV, I'm sure it happened but it wasn't all over the news like nowadays. This stuff goes on, but now it's no big deal. Finally I also believe he is stating the quality of television shows have really gone downhill when portraying good morals. But hey that's what we ask for by tuning in, it's regretable enough but I still refuse to miss one episode of "The Shield". Vic Mackey rules! |

I agree with Rock Zealot about the 1984 reference, but I also think Jim used it as a metaphor to make a case against President Bush’s reason for going to Iraq. Well at least what he perceives as the President’s reason. During the President’s re-election campaign his opponents made the assertion that America’s sole reason for invading Iraq was because Saddam had a stockpile of WMD’s. Obviously the President has lied to us about WMD’s in Iraq because we didn’t find any, and should therefore not be re-elected. That was his opponents claim and I believe is what Jim is singing about. It wakes me up and shakes my bones, It makes me miss my friends. This refers to the realization that there are no WMD’s in Iraq and that there is no reason for us (and his friends) for being there. You wasted days, I hung my head, I wore these blinders, So I'll hide from you, hide from you. This refers to the fact that he believed in the Presidents case for war. You can hear the sound when walls break down You wasted my days Building on shaky ground. He is saying that you made your case but the evidence is just not there, we have found no weapons. You can’t carry on, When walls break down You wasted my days Building on shaky ground. You should no longer be president for committing such a huge breach of trust. Sitting face to face and tides will rise our light is in your eyes. This verse means that it’s time for re-election and now the President has to answer for his actions. He is under some major scrutiny. We will be heard our voice is strong, You shamed yourself, And we’re done with you. This means more or less what it says. The voice is the ballot box and the President will not be re-elected. This is your life you led, This is my life you bled. This verse implies that the Presidents decision has not impacted him as much as it has affected all of us. These tides sweep us out of reach. Iraq was no real threat (big ocean between us) and we should not have gone to war based on WMD’s. I think he references the book 1984 because we all bought into the President’s claim for finding WMD’s in Iraq. I am not going to say whether or not I agree with his point of view because I have no desire to engage in a flame war on this site. I am only giving my opinion on what this song is about and I could be all wrong, but here you go take it or leave it. |

That’s a very interesting theory MykelCarli. Let me try this out. The proposition handcuffed to the park bench (buy into all of this materialism and you will be trapped in this endless cycle; i.e. credit, payments, debts, bills, always working). Hypodermic people (the Jones’s in a perpetual struggle to keep up with the Jones’s), poking fun at the living, (those who don’t care about “things”). (The consumer provides a demand), “Please lift the weight out this.” (Big industry provides a supply and convinces you "the user" to purchase their wonderful new product), “It takes the weight out of living.” You have explained the next verse. Let these walkers (hypodermic people, consumers, “the Jones’s”), trip on endless proof (either means let them be happy with all of this junk. Or it means let them stumble all over themselves clamoring for our next big thing, upgrade, new version, or whatever else they come up with to try and sell to you). Pattern (our marketing campaigns that feature above all else peer pressure and status symbols) against user (the consumer) dilated (refers to the awe felt by the user/consumer about this amazing new thing that you MUST have). Circus carny guarding the gates of heaven (buy all our crap and your life will be so much better). Brilliant interpretation, (“Collect all four!”). The references to lost time are what made me believe that it was more about prescription drug abuse. I’ll try and explain. Start by typing Ritalin and Columbine into google and you will see where my perspective comes from. I believe the references to lost time refer to a life where prescription drugs never completely allow you to learn from what life experience has to offer. “Trickling the ticking of this grandfather clock”, refers to moments of clarity where the drugs wear off and you are forced to deal with life without the altered state. Anyone who has ever been so drunk they blacked out at a party and can only remember bits and pieces of what you said or did (because your friends tell you), is an example of that. The reference to “landfills” also refer to the time you have lost in this altered state, it’s immortal because you will never get those moments/experiences back. But I like your theory a lot better it explains MUCH more than the prescription drug angle. Brilliant work my friend I think you have nailed it. |

Good eye aleahxox. Hey it was late I really can't type but so far one error pointed out of all the rest of the lyrics I posted isn't too bad I guess. IMO this is one of the most talented bands we will see for quite some time. I think the song is about the members of Sparta coming of age/growing up together and how their freindship strengthened through all the time they shared. However I'm sure I'm wrong. |

They are singing about drugs, but not the kind I think most of you are thinking about. This is all speculation but I believe they are singing about how our society is becoming more medicated. Every day some new drug comes on the market to help us put off every day hostilities that just fifty years ago would have been considered life. For example there is evidence that ADD is over-diagnosed and that some of these children just need a good spanking, but instead we prescribe ridilin. But that's just the beginning later on in life we have even more really good drugs to help get through young adulthood on through midlife crises, the latest trend in the eighties was valium now its prozac or zoloft. The numb arm of the elderly describes a lifetime of such treatment where the hottest thing is probably vicadin for the physical pain of growing older. And let's not forget the prescription drug of choice for major abuse, VIAGRA!! Just speculation but from this perspective is the only way I can make sense of "takes the weight out of living". Hypodermic people refers to someone who chose the life of medication and the living is someone who has not. Once the concept has been grasped I think the rest of the lyrics fall into place. |
