Okay kids. I'm surprised that no one has said anything about how the intro ties into the song? That should give you a HUGE clue as to the meaning of the song. It starts out with gunfire, obviously indicating a war. Then Dave sings, "She said a hundred times, she said a thousand times..." Now go into the actual song. If you listen to it in this context, you realize it is a woman who has fallen in love with a soldier. He is her "American baby" and she wants him to stay. She knows he has to go, leaving her in this war-ravaged country that she inhabits. "I, I hold, hold onto you you bring me hope, I'll see you soon. And if I don't see you, oh I'm afraid we've lost our way." She doesn't want him to leave her behind, but she knows he has to. And the heartbreak in itself will kill her faster than the war will. Go back and listen to the song now. Include the intro. I think you'll find even more beauty to it. "Nobody's laughing now, but you could always make me laugh out loud." It's simple. I'm surprised none of you got it. |

I saw that no one had posted this song yet, so I definitely felt the obligation to share such an amazing work with fellow John intellects. I've only heard this live, and I pray that he puts it on his next album because it is truly phenomenal. Its melancholy hopefulness reminds me of a friendship that I am disentangling myself from right now, and this song is how I hope that my friend feels about me. I put the lyrics up as an away message, hoping he'll get the point. "Just because I said I didn't want her Doesn't mean I wanted her to go In fact I quite depended on her But then I didn't even think that she knows." This hits home... he never told me until it was too late, and now I'm picking up and leaving. Leave it to John to write a song for every situation of my life. I hope everyone enjoys this as much as I do... I hope he plays it when I go see him in August. |
