great song, i'm sure the meaning has been unvailed by now...but i would advise for all of you that actually love incubus to try sounding somewhat intelligent. Example some of you say that their message is basically "fuck you society" now that's what some metalhead would say...try using other words. your just lowering yourselves to the way society uses words like fuck. |

Isn't it strange that a gift could be an enemy? = most of us think our life is a waste and were a waste and better off dead, so that basically means that most of us consider our life (the gift) an enemy, cause thinkgs aren't going as well as we would like em too.
Isn't it weird that a priviledge could feel like a chore?= All of us feel like what we do is like a chore. Our daily routines and such...and well chores aren't the funnest thing, and we consider life a chore, cause we have to do things we rather not do.
Maybe it's me but this line isn't going anywhere...= meaning comforming to something you don't believe makes it hard to feel comfortable doing whatever it is your doing, so you feel like your going nowhere.
Maybe if we looked hard enough, we could find a backdoor (find yourself a backdoor) = meaning we can escape what society says is "normal" and "quality" and do whatever it is we feel comfortable with (sorta like religion )
I see you in line, dragging your feet = that most of us comform to society without realizing it and comform to the ideals, maybe not on purpose, but were all so blinded, and sheltered from the rest of the world ( U.S ) you have my sympathy = sounds like brandon is saying that he feels bad for us that have gotten immuned to this egocentric society, and can't think for ourselves.
The day you were born, you were born free = this means that we werent born with certain needs or thoughts, hopes, dreams, goals, etc...and that's why most of us are so hard on ourselves and negative, cause now we all worry and worrry, which means that were not free anymore. Another example...people aren't born evil, or full of hate...most of us grow hate or learn love and too love...but we all have free agency, which means we can make our own decisions, but concenquences will occur.
and the rest of the song is basically the same message...i hope i made some sense...i love incubus cause they allow me to think and ponder about what they say and it's usually a message or revalation to me, and i absolutly admire and respect that...maybe some of you that like incubus should try thinking for yourselves...and not go by incubus's word and say how you relate to them...cause you don't...just try to get something out of their music...use it like a learning tool. |

yea i always thought it was about drugs, but the fact the beginning it sounds like his talking about a person, not a substance, but maybe the person that got him to start drugs somewhat ruined his life...and then the end he says that his about to see a million things he thought hed never see before and so on...and that he doesn't miss or need drugs now....cause his actually happy with how things are going, and he doesn't feel down like he use to...and that doing drugs wasnt helping him either...it sounds like he did (maybe still does once in awhle) heroin, crack...but who knows what kinda dope him talkin about |

I think that the beginning is talking about how he or someone feels there is no room for him, in the music world. And that all the devotion into writing great poetry, personal songs and singing his heart out yet he feels there is no room for him. Submits to the substance that first got him there. SOunds like his talking about starting drugs and if anyone of you did drugs you would understand that alot of the times when you do drugs you only feel good for awhile, and that in the end of your voyage you actually feel worse about yourself and what your doing, and you wish that you would have never felt bad enough to start doing it thinking that you would feel better. and you feel like you haven't accomplished anything. Especially if your struggling to be part of having a career as a musician. The "he cries out to god or just no one" means his lost his faith, and his so depressed and he hoped for god to help him but instead it go worse and he slowly lost faith and hope. I definently can relate to this song....alot. |

I think this song is about some jerk that only wants her for sex and when she says "how dare you treat me like someone you'd hire" it seems like this guy threatens her with...if you don't do what i say you wont be able to live here anymore. And the whole "don't burn me up" i think it's also talking about having sex, and how shes fed up of it. |

I personally think that his not talking about Mary Jane, weed, etc...it sounds more like heroin or maybe both. And that as much as he wanted his friend to quit, he knew that his friend would take it the wrong way...and he rather have his friend day from a natural cause or an accident, and not something the he could have prevented. Maybe he got his friend to start certain drugs or got him to try em along time ago, and now that his moved on his life and out of reasons not to do drugs (like being bored) he feels extremely guilty cause his friend still has that old boring life...and maybe it's not drugs...maybe he talking about tobacco. My personal experience made me light headed creating a slight allusion that i was "high" |

Do half of you people even really know and love green day? Cause it sounds like you don't know shit about their songs. Anyhow...i think this song is talking about some guy that use to pick on (mike in this case) and use to shove the fact that he wasn't popular (maybe when he was in hs) and now Mike is this big successful musician doing what he loves for a living, and i'm sure the guy his talking about isn't literally dead, just dead in the sense that his no longer popular and all those things he use to think were important have faded and no one likes him anymore, basically he has a shitty life. So Mikes saying HA look at me, you use to say I wasn't cool and better off dead...so it's like pay back...great song. Really get's me as a musician all pumped up. |

I haven't been an Alkaline Trio fan forever, only for 2 years now. But it's not that I think they sold out, it's I know they DID NOT sell out. Second they never play Alkaline Trio on MTV, trust me my brothers makes me watch it all the time.
