I love this song. the lyrics seem to be wrong though. anyway this song jsut reminds me of my ex girlfreind because i always used to sing the beggining of it to her when we were laying in bed. now i sing the end to myself cause shes not laying in bed with me. frustration can be gorgeous is one of the greatest lines ever. this song is just amazing |

the girl that this song reminds me of is also named emily (i called her em for short (M)). She was the first girl to ever really break my heart, and shes so immarute about the whole thing that she doesnt even realize it. But most of the time that i would talk to her on the phone i would sit on my bay window (my college dorm has bay windows for every room...even the 14th floor that i'm on) and then when she was at school and i didnt have class i would sit there looking over philly and just think about things...mostly her. the fall part is just me waiting for this situation to hit bottom, while trying to pretend that it doesnt hurt as bad as it does. while always keeping my eyes on whats coming up (im leaving this school to go back home and start uconn next fall, i'm leaving the 22nd of march which is way to soon). to me personally this song switches perpectives alot, even though its probably not ment to...but the thing above does say "what does this song mean to YOU". if everything was perfect then we would still be together and she never would have done what she did. but also another thing is that i always put her up on some sort of pedestool where i gave her this perfect quality that she really doesnt deserve. I was going through alot of shit when we first got together and her helping me through it and being the only one who called while i was in the hospital for treatment (4 hours in the chemo room is not fun.) she just really meant alot to me. she was old enough to know that i really cared for her, but not mature enough to see how much. Also i wasnt able to see how many people really care about me, cause she was the only one that mattered at the time. also now she doesnt seem to get that i still really care for her, and it hurts to talk to her after what she did and how she treated me. the rememboer tonight line reminds me of valentines day and the amazing night that we spent together. she took me to her shore house and her secret spot that she had never shown anyone before. i know that it will last the rest of my life, and i hope she cant go back there without thinking of me. Then the next day i went home for my dad's birthday and that night she ended up sleeping with a freind of mine. Thats where the "i would never want to be in his shoes but i would give anything to take his place" line comes in. Thats also where everything fell apart and now im just sitting here at 4:30 in the morning still waiting to hit the ground. it really hurts. everytime i try to get her out of my life she tries to get back in it and i let her, and then i just get let down farther. but i am leaving in about a week, and i will probably never see her again. thats what this song means to me, and it makes me want to cry and break something every time i hear it. i should chage my name to emo mike. -anyone else going to the final show on the 22nd, im gonna drive up from CT by myself for it, i really hope they play this song. -mike |

hmm, i always thought it was jsut about heroin abuse, but you make a very good point. Both fit based on perspective. I think ATD-I should have made videos like invalid letter department for every song...that would be alot easier, but it would also take alot of the whole "what does the song mean to you. either way this is an amazing song and RoC is easily one of my all time favorite CDs. I have not heard any Mars Volta but i am a big sparta fan (however i feel the demo versions of songs are alot better than the full length.) |

i always thought that this song was about his fathers unwillingness to accept what his son does for a living (playing in an obscure band thats not going to make him rich.) there seems to be many layers to this song though. i never got the guys and dolls reference, i just always thouhgt of his doubts as a musician. i dont know though. |

I tried to figure out the mumbled words in the background of the begining...theres a few grey spots and things im not sure of, but it seems right. have they made it for you this will never ...you darling you just cant fool them (me?) maybe it would go away it never went away it will always be there i cant make anything out of the last one though. Anyone have any ideas? |
