i read in guitar world way back when that dave wrote this song so that he could have a song where the verse and chorus based on the same riff "tom petty style". when i found out that the band plays everyone in the video except the d, i was surprised because taylor makes a very convincing woman. |

question: what is the very last line of this song? it sounds like "bandages have advantages too" |

i wonder if anyone noticed the use of the phrase "a carolina". in this song, it's meant to symbolize that it could be happening in anywhere, u.s.a., but the same phrase is used in "king of the road": "left you in a carolina". so perhaps what happened is that when their bus broke down, they were walking the streets of a carolina when travis saw abject poverty in the form of window washers and shopping-cart-pushing homeless people (perhaps one of them asked for money and he said no and they said "hey! you're part of it") and wrote a song about it.
on a sillier note, has anyone seen the video, which has a crowd-surfing bear in it? rock. |

i was listening to this song and my mom came in the room and said "that's a pretty weird letter. what would you do if you got a letter that said that?" |

actually, i was reading an interview with ben that said something to the extent that "i know the line about prematurely ending my career sounds like it's about radish, but my friend actually thought of it so i stuck it in the song". so it's just a happy coincidence |
