The message is obvious, but one thing that I especially like the lyric is not" "Don't let your kids be hypnotized By the ways of the world" but rather "Don't let your kids be hypnotized By the ways of the world that WE live in" Adding those last 4 words adds the subtle dig that the sheltered types mentioned in this song are not quite as separate from the world as they'd often like to think.... |

Given the stereotypes associated with the punk cabaret, it is interesting to me that this seems to be a very conservative song that longs for the good old days and serious questions whether all this technology, particularly new ways of communicating, is necessarily good for society, even though it is faster. I also think there is idea to the effect that our generation has lost any sense of identity is expressed in this song... if anyone has read Alan Watts, this seems to parallel his thoughts very nicely. One question: does anyone know what is the MKB is? |

I think this song is about the conflict between faith and reason. In the singer's childhood days, he was on one extreme of all faith... he was naive and couldn't reconcile what he was "supposed to believe" with the world. Because his head wasn't satisfied, his faith was empty and in vain. He was forced to conclude that he was lying to himself. The second part of the song recounts the same man in an adolesent period. Here he has gone the other direction and abandoned faith altogether in favor or reason. This "cold" logic makes more sense on one level... his intellect is satisfied, but his heart is still starving. Therefore, he is STILL lying to himself, in the sense that this approach has led him to a hopeless lifestyle; one which he knows deep inside does not satisfy him. Nowhere in the song does the speaker come to a resolution, yet the conclusion seems obvious. Neither faith nor reason alone is sufficient; life is about finding a balance between the two. Perhaps this is what is meant by the last line: "we're waiting for something that will never come". There are no easy answers... to find fulfillment, you must both learn and seek. It will never come to you, you have to make it all come together. For me. this song brings to mind the quote by Einstein: "Science without religion is lame, religion without science is blind." Only with both will you ever be able to truly make sense out of life. |
