Blind Guardian – Mirror Mirror Lyrics 23 years ago
The song is from the album Nightfall in Middle-Earth, which refers to events that take place a few millenia before the Lord of the Rings. This song in particular is quite probably about one of the two hidden cities of the High Elves ('It lies unknown, this land of mine'), Gondolin being the more likely candidate because Ulmo (the Lord of Water) is mentioned. Other parts of the song fit in with Gondolin as well, such as the chorus: The ruler of Gondolin was warned that his city might fall, but he trusted in his walls rather than in an escape to the sea, which might have saved his people.

Symphony X – Egypt Lyrics 23 years ago
Hmm...Yes and no. It's based on the 'visions' of some crackpot seer who claims to know the history of Atlantis. The whole album is, in fact.

Alnantees, in this case, refers to Egypt, as does the Kingdom of Gold. The song takes place a short time after the fall of Atlantis, as Ma'at, the bringer of balance (the child mentioned in the song) tries to enlighten humanity. In the end, she fails (the last part is sung from the point of view of the 'adversary'), but she does manage to hide away some of her secrets...which lays the groundwork for the song 'Rediscovery'.

Nightwish – FantasMic Lyrics 23 years ago
It's not just to Walt, two of the movies it mentions were made after he died =).

But still, I agree. A goth-metal tribute to Disney...who'd have thought it'd be possible, and even then, who would have believed it could be that awesome?

Blind Guardian – The Soulforged Lyrics 23 years ago
Heh. Just in case there are people who don't get this song:

It's about Raistlin Majere, a wizard from the Dragonlance series of fantasy novels originally created by Margaret Weis and Tracy Hickman.

Blind Guardian – Thorn Lyrics 23 years ago
Not really about Drizzt.

The entire album (Nightfall in Middle-Earth) is about the Silmarillion by J.R.R. Tolkien, a book of legends set long before the events of The Lord of the Rings.
This particular song seems to be about Turin Turambar, son of a great mortal hero, who was driven to madness and death by his destiny.
Turin was haunted by cruel fate. While he was a great hero in his way, he also brought grief and death with him wherever he went...for example, when an elven friend of his -Beleg the Strongbow- found him having a nightmare and tried to wake him, he believed his friend to be an enemy, attacked and killed him, with Beleg's own sword. His mother and sister, who he had been searching for throughout his entire life, were driven to madness and suicide by his actions even though they never actually met. He was responsible for the fall of an entire elven kingdom, and so on.
In the end, Turin defeated Glaurung, the oldest and greatest of Morgoth's dragons. After this, his insanity passed, and he saw for the first time all the things he had done.
In pain, he threw himself onto his sword, the same sword he had taken from the corpse of his best friend Beleg and so ended his life.

So...great song about a great tragic hero.

Blind Guardian – And Then There Was Silence Lyrics 23 years ago
It IS about the Illiad. Check the last line of the chorus for solid evidence =).

As for the exact details of what it is about...the best theory I've heard so far -and the one I myself subscribe to- is that this is the 'vision' experienced by the seer Cassandra, daughter of the king of Troy. The song shows various scenes of the war, seen in Cassandra's dream. The short part that gave the song it's name
('And then there was silence,
Just a voice from the other world
Like a leaf in an icy world
Memory will fade')
is probably the only part of the song that takes place in the 'present', as it represents Cassandra 'waking up' from her vision.

Blind Guardian – Time Stands Still (At the Iron Hill) Lyrics 23 years ago
Well, 'hews off' is a little exaggerated as well. Morgoth walked with a serious limp afterwards (Tolkien apparently meant for this to be the 'origin story' of the devil's alleged lame foot). However, after this fight (and realizing how close he had come to losing), Morgoth NEVER stood and fought again. Fingolfin succeeded in turning a god, perhaps the most powerful of them all, into a coward.

Blind Guardian – Under The Ice Lyrics 23 years ago
I don't know exactly what it's supposed to be about (it seems to have something to do with And Then There Was Silence, consider especially the reference to Cassandra), but I have sort of 'adopted' it as the 'theme song' for the character Arloest in the online graphic novel 'Jack' (http://jack.keenspace.com - warning, not for minors). It fits perfectly, including some very odd details that make it seem almost as if BG had written it specifically for this.
