i can't beleive nobody has put this together, but the song is clearly about protesters, a la Nover 1999 WTO protests. the Staples Center, while also being in LA, was the site of one of the party's conventions (GOP or DEM, i can't recall, shows how much i care) but the protests were broken up by cops, surprise, with less than freindly methods. so beyond the Staples Center, ie beyond the face of modern politics, you can see the real America, which is what the protesters are 'fighting' for before being put down. who do you think the little children are? all the college students on the streets, and of course of those protesting only a tiny proportion are actually violent (most just sit down), which is the crack about the disproportioned malcontents. no more essays, this is the difinitive answer.

could this be a reference to the vietnam war? i recall, vaguely, reading that Hetfeild's brother was a protester back in the day. one might certainly read that way, and it just seems there's that consistent theme there, of someone gone that's not coming home.

for those familiar with HP Lovecraft you might see some similarities between the general idea expressed here and some of the more demonic forces in the Cthulu mythose (nyarlathotep comes to mind). considering that there are two songs we KNOW to be about Cthulu himself it doesn't seem out of the questions. just a thought.

i took this song to be more about a personal decision you have to make rather than helping someone else. the whole disruption of freinds and family really speak to the song being about what the person is doing rather than what the person is doing for other people; it suggests that the person has to do something to be true to themselves (insert alternate important reason here) and in doing so must turn their backs on other ties and obligations. look at the long list of things being divorced, and then wonder why they're being divorced. to help someone? or is it a process of self actualization and becoming?

i've got to say that i disagree with the SO2k1 reference; the whole 'monolith' thing isn't about the movie, its about heralding a shift in human existence, consciousness etc etc. this expresses, i think, the same thing AEnima does, which is that the end of this world is coming, so to speak, and it will end all the bullshit, we hope. the mother here is earth, the rest should be pretty obvious, if you can receive it that is.
