This song recently came on in my ski helmet after I ducked a rope and was cutting a shortcut to a friends house. The woods, deep untouched snow and caribouuuuu.. Really cool. |

I agree with you Hannah, I feel that this song is about only one person, going through an incredible amount of emotional distress. Stipe is effectually interchanging the words we with I, and us with me very freely, and only referring to the narrator, whether that be himself or not. This shows the dimensions of the internal conflict, and the problem in deciding between more than one course of action. Its direct reference is ambiguous, and that makes it all the more powerful, allowing it to be applied to any complicated and painful experience that the listerner might be going through. |

| Black 47 – James Connolly Lyrics

Connolly was pre-IRA Ireland. He was a socialist and beloved by the Bolsheviks (more than one statue of him stood in Russia) - hence the socialist tone to the song. He led the Easter Rising in 1916 which captured the General Post Office (GPO) in Dublin. After they controled the GPO Connolly's cohort Patrick Pearse declared the Republic of Ireland - Illegally. Once the British found out about this they sent in the Army and Connolly was injured and captured. Since Connolly's wounds kept him from being able to stand, the British tied him to a chair and shot him in the head.
The majority of Ireland saw Connolly and his group as a bunch of radicals and condemned their actions. However, once word spread about how the British had executed Connolly the population started to support the revolutionaries and the IRA emerged. The IRA, led by Michael Collins (The Big Fellah, on the Home of the Brave album) would eventually win their independance on December 6, 1921. |

I had the opportunity to see Roger Clyne do a show with his drummer at the Bowery Ballroom in NYC. The started the show with this song, and since there was only two of them, they used gazoos to cover the part of the mariachi band. Incredible idea, incredible show. |

This song has always been a favorite of mine since my parents played it when I was a little kid.
Once on the inter-campus bus it started playing and I started to get into it and I noticed about 5 Rap-culture black kids picking on me for my "wimpy music." I wasn't going to let them ruin it and by the end of the song I had them all singing along with me. |

The Refreshments Kickass! The entire Fizzy Fuzzy Big and Buzzy album is amazing, when my first copy of it scratched I went out and bought it again.
This song is one of the Refreshments best songs, and when you're really hammered it's fun to change the lyrics to "Down on Heather." Anyone know who Heather is? |

I was real big into this band in high school, they are truely great. Yet, when I went off to school their cds just sort-of got mixed up in my collection and forgotten about. I heard this song out at the bar the other night - God, how good it is. |

You never know what went through David Byrne's head when he wrote his songs, but this song has a lot of similarities to the jewish resistance to the Nazi occupation of Poland. |

I have always been a large R.E.M. fan but would only listen to their old albums. I was a snotty close-minded fan, that thought R.E.M. was finished after Green. I woke from a nap to this song and instantly realized the quality of it. New Adventures has become perhaps my favorite R.E.M. album and I now appriciate all R.E.M. has done. Their music has matured with the band. |
