Ok, translation time! I won't go through the whole thing word for word (there are a few words I'm not sure exactly how to translate!), but this does't simply sound amazing, it's lyrics are also amazing! And in Italian/neapolitan it's so beautiful/emotional too. Ok, here goes: The first verse sets the scene, a terrace in front of the gulf of Sorrento (very beautiful corner of Italy), where the sea shines and the wind blows strong, a man embraces a girl after he had been crying. He clears his throat and his "song" starts. THe chorus is his "song". It goes something like this: "I love you so much. So very very much. It's like a chain now, that melts the blood in your veins, you know?" I know it sounds a bit weird, but TRUST me, in napoletano (which is the language used by the man) it's great! Then the man looks at the sea. He sees the lights in the middle of it which remind him of his nights in America, but the light was only the refelction of waves from a propeller of a boat (or something like that). He hears and feels the pain in the music of a piano (presumably playing nearby), but when he sees the moon come out from behind a cloud, death seems sweeter. He looks into the girl's eyes, her eyes green like the sea, and of a sudden a tear appears and his "song" starts over again So the chorus again "I love you so..." THe next verse says about the power of lyrics, or of dramatic arts, where with acting and a bit of make up you can be/become someone else. But 2 eyes, so real, so close to you, staring at you, make you forget words, they confuse your thoughts. They make everything seem irrelevant, even those nights over in America. You turn around, see your life like it's behind the stream of a propeller (as in the first verse kind of). It's life that's ending, and he thought a bit less of it, instead he already felt a bit happier, and his "song" starts over again. "Te voglio bene assaje....." So basically I think it's about this guy, who's dieing I think, and basically is looking back on his life and realises that all the things he has done are irrelevant compared to how he feels about this girl, and the fact that he knows she feels something strong for him too is enough to make him happy. Sung by Pavarotti, this song is simply amazing. i's like it was written for him. |

| R.E.M. – Losing My Religion Lyrics | 23 years ago |
| Pity this song is so overplayed. Great songs like this one need to be listened to rarely such that they can be enjoyed properly when you do....Anyway, this is one of what I call their "dreamy" songs. The type where you feel like you're dreaming or in another world or something. I think it's a song about obsession, a love obsession. The person singing is so worked up about his last love and just doesn't know what's going on anymore, or rather how to deal with it. The other person in the meantime appears to have moved on, but the person singing most definitely hasn't. The singer just takes every little bit of "evidence" from the person he loves and tries to interpret it. He thinks about it so much that in the end he doesn't remember things clearly anymore. He has visions in his head of what might be, he has visions of confronting the person and letting them know he still wants them to be together (and is terrified of this because he just does not know what their response will be, or whether it is wise to be doing this as it could lead to a lot pain, as if he knows already but still holds the greatest of hopes and looks for any evidence his hopes could still be realised). In other words he fells like he is going insane. In the end he eventually lets on, and it goes wrong, and his visions/hopes were all just a "dream", which is shattered. | |
| R.E.M. – Country Feedback Lyrics | 23 years ago |
| I think it's about some guy who's gone and made a mistake with his lover, and now they're not together anymore and they're both pretty depressed and very bitter (these clothes don't fit us right). The person singing desperately wants things to be like they once used to, but it appears that just cannot be: many things were tried to fix the relationship but it just isn't going to be like it used to (self help, self pain, EST, psychics). The person singing realises it's all his fault, and the song just ends in this lamentation of what he could have had, and knows it's all his fault. It's a very depressing song. On the road movie dvd they play this live. It's amazing on there because Michael Stipe gets down on his knees once he's stopped singing, and the guitar keeps going, and it as this really wailing/painful sound which helps carry the song's emotion perfectly. | |

| This is an amazing song! I can't really describe it, or explain it. For me it's just capturing a moment. I'm afraid I can't do better than that! | |
| R.E.M. – Nightswimming Lyrics | 23 years ago |
| A beautfil song. It carries that kind of slightly melancholy sound that is common to the whole album. I think it's a song about remembering past/youth experiences and hoe things have changed yet there are reminders in everyday life which remind us of what things were like. It doesn't have to be nightswimming, it could be anything really, it's just nightswimming here makes for a pretty cool song, or raher it's something Stipe remembers fondly. | |
| R.E.M. – Man On The Moon Lyrics | 23 years ago |
| I never really became aware of this song. All I know is I remember hearing it at work once on the radio, and I knew I'd heard it somewhere before. It sounded amazing. I then bought automatic for the people and "fell in love" with R.E.M. you could say. It's a good song, for me something to do with not following the crowd or believing everything people tell you but rather to be yourself, think for yourself and be an individual. | |
| R.E.M. – Find The River Lyrics | 23 years ago |
| This Has to be R.E.M.'s finest effort! It's so beautiful! All those harmonies....it's simply breathtaking. The way I see it it's about growing up, and how that's like a very long road. We all join the river, the river eventually finds the ocean. The video is also interesting, with the old man going for a walk. But the bes bit of the video is near the end when you see the sea/ocean and the waves crashing onto the rocks, the climax of the song. Awesome. | |
| R.E.M. – Pilgrimage Lyrics | 23 years ago |
| I simply love this song, especialy the intro. That really struck me the first time I heard it. Not really sure what it's about, but to me it seems like something about luck, and how people (and bands - like themselves) are around, will be around for a while but will eventually not be around anymore and be replaced by someone else who will inherit the "fortune". | |
| R.E.M. – World Leader Pretend Lyrics | 23 years ago |
| It's a great song. One of R.E.M.'s best in my opinion. For me it's about knocking down the defenses we build around us. A bit like overcoming the fear of letting people get to know you for example. It's also maybe about being given freedom, and realising there is a world out there and you've got to go and live/explore it instead of shying away in your own little dream world. I do think this song is open to many interpretations however, I think different people will get different things out of it. | |
