Meshuggah – Perpetual Black Second Lyrics 23 years ago
Possibly one of my favorite Meshuggah songs of all time. Ranks up there with NMCC and Ritual, IMHO. I think this is about capturing the essence of one moment of regret.. one thing that is strongly desired to be forgotten, but can't, and so leads to constant torment. Perhaps... hrm. Perhaps there is an accusation of some sort (infidelity, maybe?) which is reciprocated with an assault of some sort... maybe even just one smack, as it's one second, one moment to be forgotten. The regret is strong, but inescapable to the "continuous rerun of my own violence".. yet, the violence is there to stay, a constant mean streak in the form of an "Inherent demon." A reflexive action to being put on the spot.

Meshuggah – Rational Gaze Lyrics 23 years ago
Great song. I was surprised to hear this on a net radio station out of Las Vegas (knac.com... good stuff). In any case, I think this song is about cutting away from the images and words of "truth" known as the news. Everything we see, whether on TV, newsprint, the Internet, or heard on radio... it has to be taken with a grain of salt. The ones who realize this "complete the disintegration" and dissemination of the truth from lies. In the end though, "the ladder beyond our grasp" and there is nothing we can do to change the huge political machine in place. So, "we walk among the ignorant", knowing that there is not much we can do. In being dissidents, we only run into trouble with no solution, and so we "never stray from the common lies." Great song.

In Flames – Colony Lyrics 23 years ago
Hmm. I almost wonder if this is more of a "sci-fi" song as per Fear Factory: visions of future apocalypse when humans are no longer truly human. Then again, this can be taken in the context of genetic engineering and modern "comforts of living".

I wonder about the lines "Where we can no longer / cry and reality is torn". Taken in terms of the sci-fi... it would seem that the talk of "machine, meat and blood" would mean that emotions are hard-wired out of humanity. In the context of genetic engineering, it could mean that our current media so bombards and saturates us that we become desensitized to world pain and horror, and to the testing that is done on animals for the drugs that provide the remedy to almost any malady we face.
