The line about refuge in the oil is an allusion to masturbation, baby oil..well, you get it...I know...but Townshend has made such references in the past (Pictures of Lilly, from The Who), |

In a retrospective of Pink Floyd that was broadcast nationally on radio about 5 years ago, Gimour stated he wrote the song when he was learning to fly. the song is pure poetry, lyrically it is brilliant. it helped me through a creative writing calss in high school and I plagerized from it fully, the teacher thought I was a genius. The only inuendo is in the minds of druggie fans constantly searching for drug references and seeing them wwhere there are actually none. The guitar work makes the song worth listening too alone, brilliant as always, Gilmoure is. |

It is a song about the end of the cold war and the collapse of Soviet sattilite states in Eastern Europe. "Staring straight into the shining sun" is a definite elude to the east. It suggests that we, the west could have done more for the east at the conclusion of the second world war. In the interim period after the war and the collapse of communism, the heard our words, while we watched and did nothing as the Soviets invaded thier "Fraternal Socialists brothers" not once, but twice (Hungary 19956 and Czechloslavakia 1968), in the end freedom triumphed, but the sonfg is critical about paying lip service to ideals and not action. It was the inheriently corrupt nature of communism and the strength of the human spirit that triumphed in the east, not the idealism of democracy. |
