I, personally, agree with DatheR. When I first heard this song, I took it as someone watching their friend gradually dying, either by drugs or depression, and they just don't want to have to deal with it anymore. "Best to keep things in the shallow end..." The person has no idea how to handle the situation, so they chose not to. Of course it can mean anything, especially because it's by Maynard. And I'm kind of bias, because I have friends who attempted suicide, and I've felt like that more than once. (and totally off topic, but I just went to an APC concert, and a guy near me in the general admissions did take off his pants when Maynard suggested it...strangely the security really didn't do anything) |

I always thought that the song was talking about a prostitute or a stripper: just a girl who didn't know what she was getting into when she left home, and now she's stuck. I'm kind of confused on the "Peter Patrick" part; does anyone have any ideas? I've just been taking it as a guy who is just drifting through life, not really going anywhere, and like Taylor, he dreams that he's far away. |

| When I bought this CD awhile ago, I was reading through the lyrics, and I was immediately drawn to this song. Then, when I heard it, I was hooked. I recently used the song for lyrical analysis for a class, and my entire class was just silent when it ended. My teacher couldn't even ask me anything. It's just too striking. Great song. | |

I pretty much agree with everyone else here, as well. I love this song, though that wasn't my first impression of it. I was young when I first heard it, and my first impression was, "awh, a love song; I hate love songs!" lol. Of course I later actually listened to it and really liked it. I don't think anyone mentioned my favorite lines yet. "The sermon echoes through the walls. A great salvation through it calls to the people who stare into nowhere, and can't feel the chains on their souls." --I always think of that when I'm in church and the person next to me falls asleep on my shoulder. |
