Thrice – That Hideous Strength Lyrics 19 years ago
Okay, I feel like i should say what the major themes of the book are since he loves it and this song is named after it:

That Hideous Strength is by C.S. Lewis. The "hideous strength" is the excessive self-pride which is found in every individual at certain times (or even most times) which convinces the individual that he/she can decide right/wrong, good/bad and abstractly morph a true definition. It's not any easy thing to explain. C.S. Lewis believes there are "natural laws" which govern right and wrong to which every human being is governed by. He writes about it in the first two chapters of "Mere Christianity". Much of his writings have to do with "pride" being the attribute in man which separates him from how things really are. For instance, someone can steal from someone else and justify that they would enjoy it more. The person then decided over what is naturally thought of as wrong that it was okay/not bad to break this natural law. Oh man, i'm not a good writer, but the point is...

"that hideous strength" is excessive self-pride. Please read

"mere christianity", "the abolition of man" and "that hideous strength" by Lewis to understand the concept (take it or leave it after that)

personally, i find those three books to be the best i've ever read, and wouldn't take back those reading hours for nuttin'--

_________________________________________________

the song then i think means this:

the first lines are talking about how he passionately wishes to get the world's attention and to show it "pain"... to show it "hurt"... to show it skin that was permenently changed for the worse. He wants to get their attention and show in a personal way how this world hurts individuals like himself.

"but who has eyes..." --then he admits that people are not mentally, spiritually, (and obviously physically) ready to listen to that kind of heartfelt plea...

the lines about "unearthly silence" can be interpreted many different ways i think so i won't touch that--

okay this next part is almost verbatem "mere christianity" chpt 1&2-- so he knows that his words can't change the way things are as much as he hopes it to change... ...so he looks to a "truth that supercedes the minds of man" Lewis talks about how man's mind is subject to the universal truths or laws (this is before he even talks about christianity)--

"faith in means that look to justify the end" the book's villains each have an idea of what they want the end (or progress) of humanity and the world to look like. All these characters murder, cheat, lie, and deceive people in order to bring about "the ends" they think are best.

the "cold presence" parts are all dustin's own stuff

the end sums up that he wants to "look up" definately implying toward God's guidance and strength to enable the world to change for better like he's so passionate about. the book has undeniable themes much the same.

so in closing, don't hate it because it's about beliefs, love it for the down to earth, heartfelt, fine piece of art it is--

The Offspring – The Meaning Of Life Lyrics 22 years ago
not poetic, but definately has a message and is not meaningless ramblings like some punk and pop bands... I think it's perfect for their music. Why conceal the meaning? They still use satire and such, so it's deep, just not hidden.

I can't believe more people havn't commented on this song. This is the best offspring song lyrically, plus it's so energy-driven that no one can deny it's awesomeness. "Head over heals i've fit in before, now i don't wanna do it no more." Just break the chain of boring and blande conformity to society and be a unique, independent person in a culture where it's good to be the same, because everyone gets more money. Definately the best song by Offspring ever. Dude, there newer stuff is good too... just not that one song about the prankster with the rapper in the music video... i think they were high that day. Yes!

The Offspring – Cool To Hate Lyrics 22 years ago
Dude... this song couldn't be more satirical/sarcastic, i'm really glad you all hate everything, but dude, it points out in the beginning of the cd that if something sounds sarcastic, don't take it seriously, and at least a third of all offspring songs are satirical or sarcastic in some way. I think this whole song is totally pointing out the trend of people hating everything... "i'm only happy when I'm in my misery" dude, that's a pretty straight-forward oximoron, and this goes against all dexter's other songs if it wasn't satirical. He always is up to fighting for what you believe and making a differense, and this song would be about hating everything and not helping jack including yourself. So It's my opinion based on this that this song is just using overstatement to emphisize how people can get drawn into hating everything and slowly stopping enjoying anything.

Thrice – Phoenix Ignition Lyrics 22 years ago
Dude, the reason everyone relates thrice songs to God is not coincidental. If the lyrics weren't intended to have these interpretations, they would be just like all the other bands, and only a few songs could be interpreted in a religious fasion. But, the allusions are too obvious to ignore if you are knowledgable about the Bible. Key words (and phrases) like "rebirth", "contrite", "call from the hilltop’s… call from the streets”, “depths of the grave”, “in his grace I am sustained”, “though all is lost… now all is found”, “instill in me a new hope”, “blasphemy”, “pray”, “adonai”, “sin”… all of these could only come from the hand of someone well infasioned in Biblical lingo. So, though it’s always best to let the judgement someone’s faith be between God and that person, it is fair and reasonable to acknowledge that this artist takes to heart many teachings of the Bible and it can be reflected in his poetry. This does not mean he’s a Christian, and all his lyrics are about Jesus. These songs do capture not only the pain and struggle of life, but also the hidden undertones of hope and light.

Vitamin C – Graduation (Friends Forever) Lyrics 22 years ago
This song is ripped off of Pachabel's "Cannon In D-Major" and so it already has the emotional awesomeness that's lasted throughout the ages. The lyrics are pretty good, and I can see them making lots of girls cry at graduation. Definately femininly (if that's a word) written cause it focus's on what girls think are most important to them. That doesn't mean it doesn't apply to dudes too, but a chick way-wrote this song. I like it.
