I don't think that Trent Reznor is as blatant and unmetaphorical as most other artists. Frankly, I doubt he is simply referring to self-mutilation or drug abuse. It's all mentally done- he hurts himself (or others hurt him) with experience and his thoughts, as he numbs himself with his mind. I do both sometimes, which is why this might be my all-time favorite song. Not to mention it complies perfectly with the death of the main character of the story in my head, but that's a different topic. Even if Trent did physically harm and numb himself, this song keys in to the mental aspect of it. And I was a cutter, currently trying to pull myself away from even the possibility of self-mutilation for myself. This song honestly doesn't remind me of what had happened, but more of the reason that I take Prozac every day. |
