This song can be taken on so many levels. It was written during the demise of her marriage so that's what most people have come to believe it is about. Having lived with my parents when their marriage was falling apart, I can relate to many of the lines. For example, "I'm so tired of it turning around" can be taken as the arguments, who's winning and losing and how it's never settled. "Stop the world, call it a day" speaks for itself really, and how there comes a point where the marriage has broken down and there's no point continuing. The line that strikes me most is "It's just that living here is more than I can bear". I know that feeling well! It's like when you're just desperate to leave the house because it's just turned into a battlefield. "We've reached the point where no-one ever wins" goes back to my first point, about how there are so many arguments that are never settled, neither partner is going to come out on top and the whole marriage is pointless. Of course, this is just one level on which the song can be taken. We know that Annie is a staunch Greenpeace supporter, and this song can be looked at from an environmental point of view, about how humans are destroying the world. On a much smaller scale, it can be seen as talking about "inner peace" (Annie's words), about how things go round inside your head and make you miserable and you cannot sort them out. Well, those are my thoughts! I'd be interested to hear from anyone who thinks differently. xx |
