Schumie, I really like your approach. However, I thought these two lines were a little intense. Sounds like they're about to hang the guy: "Long slow rope is hanging Now we know what's coming" I love the description though. Bush writes beautiful things. This is my favorite song on the album. |

First off, how is the US not imperialistic, BrandNewJersey? Just because the US doesn't claim nations as its own does not mean that it gets off the hook for force-feeding "democracy" to the rest of the world (i.e. Post Cold-war Russia, Iraq). I just want to see what your argument is because I've never really talked to anyone who didn't agree that the US Government was imperialistic. RachiePie, are you positive about that lyric correction? It fits perfectly in the song either way, IMO. However, in the song, it does sound like there's a half-assed "un" before the "patriotic". I like it the way you had it better, even though its a little more cynical that way! Personally, I see a little bit of attack on the Christian mass-control over the US in the end of the second verse. For me, its criticizing the "Go to war because God loves the US and hates its enemies. w00t! Jesus!" way of thinking that the American masses tend to follow. tommyhaych, its my finding that the line you mentioned, "place bets on an empty hand" seems like the least political line in there haha. The whole song is sort of telling someone what to do. I don't know if he's trying to help a real hero figure (like a savior of some sort) or if he's being facetious and referring to something less of a savior... maybe the entire American public or the people that are supposed to keep the whole place from going out of whack. This is the biggest question I'm trying to answer. |

Excellent analyzation, matthewkf! The first time I heard this song I had no idea what it's name was and when I heard that last verse... especially that last line "some red-handed slight of hand" I was really taken by it and it felt so damned powerful. However, I'm really upset over the small fact that he named the song after it. I mean, it's a good idea to name the song after its strongest point but I feel like it kind of ruins the absolute power that part has on me. I don't know about all you, but the name of the song has it's own fat portion of defining everything about the song. |

It would make sense to be talking about his penis. You all must realize that a guy's penis is a serious holdback at times and really fucks you over in the end. Every guy is oddly obsessed with his dick and every guy has no idea why. Obsessed. Absolutely obsessed. It makes you do things that really aren't right... like manipulating people or lying or being trixy. And that all makes a lot of sense to me, seeing as I'm a guy and I've recently got myself into a really fucked up situation all because of my sexuality and I found myself wishing I didn't care about sex at all. However, I *Really* think it also means his heart. Because the things your heart feels can be really ugly sometimes... either you're in pain or you're angry and mean... which makes sense too. Look at Cursive's lyrics. They're all sad and angry. As for the instrument, I think it's simply a parody on the fact that this IS music and it would make sense to a skim-reader that an album would be named after an instrument but you have to see deeper to realize exactly what he's talking about. The Instrument is the surface level. How about this song compared to Art is Hard? There seems to be a common theme through this whole album with that. I mean, look at the very beginning... it doesn't sound like he's talking about his own lyrics like you all say he is. It evolves to that later, but I think the deal is that whomever he's writing about is being successful with her lyrics and music because she's inventing drama with him to write about (Art is Hard) and he's pissed off because he has to not only deal with her whining constantly about him, but also he must compete with her... he has to entertain people too and all they want to hear about is pain which he is tired of. |

| I have a friend who's a rather accurate embodiment of what I get from this song. She feeds on sadness of herself and others. She will find a new guy just to have drama with him and she'll go crazy on people just to get upset about it later and have something to feel helpless and sad about. She's all about her "good" poetry incarnating her super-saturated depression to communicate to the world how terrible her life can be, but how awesome she is because of it. | |

Yes, *indeed*!!! I'm so glad you pointed that out about the carpenter/twinkling star. Sounds like he's asking to be her savior... or something I'm not quite sure. Also, about the "So get that man out of my bed"... that's not female perspective as far as I can see. That's him directing Sierra's mother to get HER new man out of her life to make room for himself... because obviously he wants badly to belong there in bed with her. He wants to be Sierra's father figure. |

| I haven't even studied the lyrics. I feel drawn to the song. I can't make out any lyrics, I don't know any, I just love the song. Great beat, cool chorus, awesome band. What a great combo. I leave the interpritations to you guys, but for now, I just love the song for the music. | |
