i can't believe i'm adding onto a nelly convo, but that's what "view last comment" will do for you. however, various comments throughout this exchange pleaded for my two cents. ok...first of all, to whoever made the comment that suggested nelly is a credible artist because of his income? go fuck yourself with a splintered broom. earnings are not and should never be the merit by which art is guaged. in fact, appreciating art (in musical or other forms) can be a pretty personal experience. if only one person buys an album, but that album moves him/her to tears? hmmm? might be something to it. nelly's undoubtedly going to sell more cd's than, oh, say Chocolate Genius, but how much of this has to do with money and marketing? why did you buy that nelly disc? because the first time you heard his music you had to pull the car over and listen? maybe it was because a group of people you admire all listened to it and you, too, wanted to be "cool" like them. maybe, it's because radio programmers drilled it into your head...most people listen to what they're "told" to listen to...anyway, i like to think i listen to good music, and just because much of it is reletively unknown...well, it doesn't mean it's not aces. on the black/white thing. get a life. i do have to say, the girl who initiated the whole thing? racist. i realize you tried to apologize dear, but "most of their songs are wrong" is a really stuuuuupid thing to say. i think you were referring to rap music. this ignores and non-rap musical contribution a black person has ever made to the world of music. it's also hard for you and I, the casual white listener, to relate to. No, i don't particularly relate to the lyrics of rap music, but I don't rule out the idea that someone else can. one more thing...NELLY SUCKS! |

what can i say? i wish i had written this song. clever. both the music and the lyrics are incredibly simple--and complimentary, neither outdoing the other. the melody is beautiful, the singer inspired. the lyrics--this is a lyric-based site... Well, what I think is incredibly cool is how the song describes a cynic who surrenders to his heart. I mean, it's funny! A love song that says "boring" in the opening line--ha! Then the singer waves his big white flag, allowing the "you" to read--anything--to him. Check out his voice in the second verse. "Some of it is just 'transcendental'. Some of it is just really dumb." That's thought-provoking, funny, sweet, and TRUE all in one. I bet he was proud of that line. If you haven't heard this song, ot the album for that matter, definately make it a point to do so. Excellent pop songwriting. |

i definately wouldn't say it has no meaning. a little background: tweedy grew up in the saint louis metro (in belleville, IL). i'd wager to say that he made his fair share of visits to the city and i'm sure many of them were musically related (you gotta buy records and see bands, man). "Laclede's Landing" is a popular nightclub area in st louis, situated downtown, on the Mississippi River. It's also incredibly cheesy. I think this song is about jeff's own musical conscience. here's this really clever musician, releasing brilliant records, swifty dodging tired rock cliches, and pleasing fans and critics while doing so. That takes thought. Jeff's doing a lot of missing in this tune. He misses cheesy metal bands and his own innocence. I picture a young man, naive but enthusiastic about his world. Playing music used to be instantly gratuitous for him. He got his rocks off by playing KISS covers. Now, to endure on both artistic and careeristic ground, he has to mine a little deeper--to challenge his impulses--to survive with grace. Is it coincidental that a song that recalls hair metal explodes with such intricate inner-rhythms and sythesizer soundscapes? then again, i don't know who this drummer ho is. back to the drawing board. |
