Tonight will be the night that we begin to ease the plugs out of the dam. (i agree that this is about releasing emotions, fears, thoughts etc about the past, present and future. where are we heading?) And we will stand knee deep in the flow, the undertow will grab our heels and won't let go. (i think this is about them discovering the intensity of the emotion and not being able to escape it) And while we hold, our legs quivering, the water rises now to our teeth (being overwhelmed with it) when we just let go and sail belly up to the clouds, (i always thought this was a death reference...or playing dead...like giving up. you know how when fish die, they go belly up?....or it could just be "going with the flow" in a peaceful manner..) the rocks scraping our backs. (the troubles in life don't seem to hurt as much now that you have a realisation..) To breath in the air will be the only thing that we have (don't know where they're heading, confusion. "the only thing that we have" when you're thinking about where you're life is heading you dont seem to think about anything else and therefore feel like you have nothing) and all the wasted nights and empty moments in our lives flushed away (i interpret this first part of the song as a transition. i'm kind of going through it right now as i'm leaving school and going out into a different world. i have to change. i'm looking back on the things ive done and im like "fuuuck, why did i do that? what a waste of time"..so yeah) as we sway with the rhythm of the waves bobbing us up. (this could first be mistaken for water bur it's actually sound..) Crests fall to troughs we feel our gills open up. (crests are the part of the wave above the neutral line, troughs are the low part. this could literally mean sound, or it could be a metaphor for a mood change. dropping down to depression. the gills opening up might mean a change. acceptance. the emotion (water) that is overwhelming them, they have now learned to deal with (breathe in with the gills) And sail belly up to the clouds, the rocks scraping our backs. To breath in the air will be the only thing that we have and if the hook sets in the bottom of our lungs, (if something catches us along the way) we'll rip it out and lick the blood off with our tongues. (we'll take it on without fear and we're determined to get rid of it with or without pain. proving this by the intimidating part where he says "we'll rip it out and lick the blood off with our tongues" as if he's saying "bring it on, im ready now. i'm stronger") (i think he refers to it as "we" and "our" because he's not alone. everyone goes through this transition.) The despair can ravage you if you turn your head around to look down the path that's led you here, (he is now saying "you" because he is sharing his wisdom, experience. everybody looks back in regret and then gets depressed over the things they did) cause what can you change? (self explainitory) You're a vessel now floating down the waterways. You can take your rudder and aim your ship, (you cant change the past, but you can direct yourself and your future to where you want to be, what you want to do etc) just don't bother with the things left in your wake. (follow your dreams.) Just sail belly up to the clouds, the rocks scraping your back. To breathe in the air will be the only thing that you have and your love will be warm nights (we think of warm nights, we think of something special, comforting, peaceful...it's bliss.) with pockets of moonlight (you have a rare and beautiful thing) spotlighting you as you drift, the actor in this play. (when i hear this line i always picture a man in a boat drifting down a river with a spotlight on him waving to everybody. but it's a metaphor for drifting through life. actor, as in the role you played in life) And you walk across the stage, take a bow, hear the applause, and as the curtain falls, just know you did it all the best that you will how (in the end, you did what you could and thats awesome because life is hard. life is a killer) and you can hear them cheering now. (everyone is glad that you survived the ups and downs and made it so far. they are greatful for YOU and what you have done) So let a smile out and show your teeth cause you know you lived it well. =o) this song is so moving. every time i listen to it, it makes me feel so content with who i am and where i am in life. ...yeah im a fag :oP xxx |

I can relate really well to this song right now. I believe it's about longing for something past. You lose the love of your life, the only thing that made you feel whole. You try to get over it by seeing other people but they just never make you feel loved and complete like that perfect person did. No matter how intimate or romantic etc your relationships are, you're always looking for what they made you feel. You feel guilty, like you are using the current lover just to get that feeling again. thats how i see it anyways? |

I agree with asktheangels that this song is about brody....just for the part where she sings "meat petals bloom in a bone garden" i always imagined it would be about her overcoming anorexia "aint no god, no ghost gonna save you now" she realised she had to make it on her own "don't waste my time, come on get what you come for" i basically get that she hates being fucked around...simple? i dont know :o) i think the highway is a metaphor for when you're up late at night thinking about something that you really want to resolve. "the edge" being the edge of your sanity? (so to speak) "drink the fear" meaning taking it in, accepting it and getting over it??? meh thats the best i can do at the moment considering how tired i am....distillers fucking rock! brody has such a harsh voice, so much raw emotion, so inspiring - i love it! |
