If you listen carefully to the lyrics from the whole album, there seems to be a unifying theme of co-dependancy. I think his girlfriend was somehow damaged, depressed, and addict, something, and he gave up trying to save her, but it didn't make him stop caring. |

ok so first of all, elton john didn't write these lyrics, bernie taupin wrote them, like most of elton john's other stuff. secondly, i know the woman this was written about and she was really just the seamstress/ makeup artist who danced in her spare time. she and bernie never even had an affair, this song is referring to one night when they got locked out of the apartment and had to come stay at her place so they all slept in one room. as friends. |

I think this song is not only about alcohol. But about any addiciton whether that be to a substance or and experience or an environment. I beloive this song is also about co-dependency and what it is like to be in love with an addict. Of anything. This song is my favortie song ever because it totally sums up my last relationship. I was in love with a girl who was depressed and addicted to smack. Basically, I lost myelf in her addictions. When you are i love with an addict, they don't have enough left in them to give back what you gave to them. my favorite line is "now I'm going down and you're not even around" because it shows that she is gone before he can even get a grip. |

This is a beautiful poem about leaving something you love behind because you can't take the memories. I believe this poem is about a woman who lives in Jersey, was raped in Jersey, and will be having an abortion in Jersey. I think she needs to leave the city bcause the memories of the rape and the guilt of the abortion is too fresh in her mind. in a way, this peom really captures the feeling of the helplessness after a rape and the need to blame it on yourself. |

Ok, I know that ben himself has said that this song is about abortion. But to me it means something diferent. to me this song really relates to a situation i've been in before. I feel that this song is about a man whos girlfriend is extremely depressed and tries to kill herself. here is a breakdown of the lyrics:
"6 am day after Christmas
I throw some clothes on in the dark
The smell of cold
Car seat is freezing
The world is sleeping
I am numb"
i believe he is going to see his girlfriend the day after christmas just to see how she did being home alone because her parents are gone. and in a way he sortof knows what he will find, he knows that she will still be depressed.
Up the stairs to her apartment
She is balled up on the couch
Her mom and dad went down to Charlotte
they're not home to find us out
And we drive"
this part of the song to me symbolizes that he finds her on the sofa bleeding to death because she has cut herself again, but this time she's lost too much blood. and so he gets her into his car and rushes her to the hospital where she is bandaged up and recovers.
they call her name at 7:30
I pace around the parking lot
then I walk down to buy her flowers
And sell some gifts that I got"
After she finishes up at the hospital he takes her to see a phsyciatrist, and he buys her flowers because he knows how hard it is for her to admit to her problem. I think the line about selling his gufts is sortof saying that he is throwing all of his fortune and life away for something less then he could ultimately have.

Then she ever has before"
in the first 2 lines of this verse he is speaking directly to his girlfriend trying to explain to her that death is not the best choice.
