On first listen it seems that it's a song talking about American's during World War II dodging the draft by fleeing to Canada. But Bazan goes on to talk about how Canada isn't what she used to be because thanks to America they could no longer boycott the war and had to fight as well, thusly the American's would have no where to flee to. I'm not sure what this song is saying on a deeper level, which is curious for a Pedro song, since it's never that hard to find the deeper meaning. I'm puzzled. |

This song isn't about a relationship between two people but rather the relationship between Bazan and Jesus. It's an example of how people think that Jesus doesn't hear our prayers and doesn't answer us back, hence the title, "I'm Always the One That Calls". Bazan feels like he's getting no response from Jesus when he prays, he keeps calling him, but no one is calling back. Perhaps this seems like it's about a relationship but Bazan is not nearly as juvenille as that; there's a bigger picture here kids. |

It's about a character, whether fictional or not, that is living in sin and seems to think that it's OK and telling everyone else the same. They're misleading people. In this song Bazan is "tired of losing" everytime this character says something because they seem to never admit when they're wrong. |

Clearly a very bitter satirical song about religion and television evangelists who don't "practice what they preach" but instead offer salvation for money. Though I don't know where Genesis stand in matters of faith the message of this song is clear. |

It really makes me wonder if anyone reads previous comments seeing as so many people are saying, "this is about a man drowning". It isn't. Phil Collins has mentioned that fact in MANY of his interviews. It was written during a tough period in his life while he was going through a divorce with his wife and is most likely a commentary on that time. Eminem mentions this song in one of his one, of course, being the idiot that Eminem is, he also seems to believe that this song is about someone drowning. |
