| Idlewild – Roseability Lyrics

In her own work, Gertrude Stein attempted to parallel the theories of Cubism, specifically in her concentration on the illumination of the present moment and her use of slightly varied repetitions and extreme simplification and fragmentation. A lot of this technique trickles into Roddy's songwriting. My first impression of the band's lyrics really reminded my of Hemingway, and it's only logical that they both derived the style from the same place (ie Gertrude Stein). |

| Idlewild – Blame It On Obvious Ways Lyrics

So far this has to be my favorite track on the new album. The second guitarist really adds to their sound, and here it shines.
As with most of the rest of the new CD however, the lyrics seem to be drifting more toward ambiguity. Sort of the polar opposite of 100 broken windows in that regard, which is in my humble opinion their best work, but perhaps Mr. Woomble is being fecitious. |

| Iron & Wine – Naked as We Came Lyrics

I agree with deliriumtrigger in that this song insinuates committment. Certain knowledge that one will be leaving in the arms of the other is to assume growing old together and leaving the world as they came into it, naked save for being not alone.
The birds leaving and autumn to me contrast the relationship of the people in the song, which will endure such change as the world might offer, up until the inevitable. |

And I'm lonesome when you're around
And I'm never lonesome when I'm by myself
And I miss you when you're around
This is about two people in a relationship who change until they are no longer who they were and the glue that holds them together is wearing thin. Barnicles is of a very simlar theme; try to hang on to a sinking ship. |

This song chimes in tune with the overall theme of desolation and self destruction in society, more specifically the neo capitalistic materialism that is stuck throttle on our big, shiny American muscle car careening heedlessly toward the cliffs. |

| Modest Mouse – Ohio Lyrics

"Rows of lights to illuminate lines
Why don't they turn them off and let us see night "
This line from the song holds me spellbound every time it graces my car stereo, which trust me is more often than is probably healthy. I don't know if any of you have ever been to the open farmland of Ohio or perhaps some other desolate, flat, clear skied area of the midwestern USA but to look up and see black, the uninhibited heavens commanding your full attantion, if you haven't then me interpreting the song for you is a moot point. It instills such a sense of being so miniscule, and lets the mind wander away from the illuminated lines of everyday life and the thought boundaries which typically constrain us. It's almost like the metropolitan lights represent the wool being pulled over our eyes, a big festering distraction from the true meaning of things and our place amidst a churning cosmic sea.
Throught the song the ideas of seeing clearly and seeking redemption from cracked a dry hearts, traveling through life awake but napping. In essence, to me the song is about losing meaning in this fast paced American life. |

Enter the elitist war of the indie snobs.
LOL
Built to Spill's sound derives a decent amount more from Neil Young than any of the other bands listed, IMHO. And for the record, Modest Mouse 0wnZ j00! :D |

| Saves the Day – Sell My Old Clothes, I'm Off to Heaven Lyrics

Here goes...
Like a lot of Saves the Day's music, this song has some very cynical undertones that some people completely overlook, and there's not wonder why. The music is so melodic it's to the point of almost being "pop", and it changes the face of the emotion in the song, but IMHO it's brilliant. Underneath the thinly veiled pop exterior, the lyrics are often dark and violent to an extent, but here is my particular views on this song:
The cynisism is blatently appartent here, obviously the lead singer has a lot of angst pent up from a past relationship that left him in the cold when his girl found somebody "better". (or maybe this is just a manifestation of his lack of confidence in his role in the relationship?) I think he is almost jesting the former girl of his by offering to change his own physical characteristics to better suit her whims. It isn't entirely self pity that's being played here, it's more of a big healthy "F YOU" to enable him to move on. He's been suffered an injustice. By making light of that through a musical satire of their relationship, I believe it accomplishes just that. (Hence the "To Hell with you")
The song moves you through the process of disbelief in the reality of what she has done to him, denial, confusion, anger, and acceptance. A very charged song, my personal favorite by the band. |

| Craig's Brother – Dear Charlotte Lyrics

This was the song that drew to Craig's Brother years and years ago, and I wasn't dissapointed in the least. Now as the become increasingly popular, I feel the need to add some insight on what their lyrics represent to me.
This song is relatively straight forward and deals with being content about your situation in life, and struggling with change. |

| Craig's Brother – Going Blind Lyrics

This song is actually entitled "Going Blind" and was originally called "Gus" on the band's demo. It deals with the stuggle of lust in general, and how it devalues it's object in the eyes of the beholder. (Hence the title's illusive reference to masturbation ;-) ) |

| Craig's Brother – Insult To Injury Lyrics

This is a very harsh and powerful song. Craig's brother is a "Christian Band" and this song is a message to those who would call themselves Christian and are in reality disillusioned bitgots and zealots. These people stand on their soapboxes preaching down to the masses on how they should live, while the song rebutts with lines like "Did God make be blind and give you my eyes?" and "So now you're promising your Disney religion." The moral? If your aim is to convince other people that your religion truly is the way, don't try to project an image of perfection, you lose the ability to relate to your target audience so to speak. We are all imperfect when held to a standard such as God. |

This is IMHO the most beautiful song that Dave does. It is THE perfect love song, written for the girl he proposed to and was then rejected, hence the song "Halloween". |

Dave was once quoted as saying that he was very fond of Jesus Christ, not for what he said, but how he said it. I think this shows through in this song, a reminder to those of the Christian faith that the point of their religion should be love. |

To me, this song represents the harsh honesty with one's self about a relationship gone south. There is evidence of self pity and being held slave to the relationship by the singers own will as well. |

| Dashboard Confessional – So Impossible Lyrics

I think this song is slightly more complicated than a good deal of Dashboard songs. Notice Chris's voice throughout the song has a cynnical tone to it, and upon inspection of the lyrics, it is apparent that the interests portrayed by the girl are not held by the singer. (ie talking the big smack, playing the fool, latest fashions, etc.) However the singer plays along because he is a slave to relationships that are so impossible as stated bt the title of the song. Then at the end he adds the bit about wading through all of your bad days just to end them with someone you care about. This is just what I got out of the song, don't flame!! :) |
