seriously guys, i know this is "songmeanings" but cut out the crackpot theories that this song is about some girl or other bullshit. when you strip it down, this is the least mystical, least interpretive song he wrote.
it's amazing, don't get me wrong. but it's clearly about his booze bottle/flask singing to him in a seductively evil sort of way. about 75% of you get that. make comments about his more abstract songs, he has a ton of them. just don't tell the rest of us that this is a song about a girl (unless you make a REALLY strong argument.) |

the other party is a bottle of booze. no doubt about it; elliott was too self-deprecating to call himself "baby" and say he was going to kiss himself. he wouldn't even say those cliches if he were writing a love song to a girl. i do agree that he could be speaking about bars; it's not evident what he's referring to, and that is the beauty of a talent writer's ambiguity. i have to be a critic, however, and say that i can't agree with you because it seems so fitting when you make the booze the "first person" and the alcoholic the "second person." i understand your emphasis on it being a solitary "monologue" as opposed to dialogue, but this is because it's supposed to feel solitary, and semi-constructed. he's self-aggrandizing the bottle and self-loathing himself as he talks about the bottle in a love/hate kind of way... he knows it's bad, and he personifies it as a kind of draining evil, but he knows he loves it, so he paradoxically personifies it as a lover that shows a certain affection. it's an amazing song, and one i can personally understand. |

i hope you're clean off you're meth habit "cyrus and jeff." even it's 3 years late, you made the most insanely unintelligible interpretation of a song, because your "meaning" diffused into an overtly personal relation to your real life emotions, and however hard you tried, you failed to connect anything to the song and what your asinine interpretation of it was. if you had a college education (or a high school education that might've prepared you for college,) you would have used textual examples in your argument. yours failed to meet the minimum standards of even a "song meaning," and i suggest you delete that comment before you embarrass yourself more.
you and i both wrote these comments drunk, the difference is i know how to actually write. you are some starry-eyed pseudo-philosopher that thinks they need to go online every time they eat three caps of mushrooms. your shitty epiphanies are boring and tired, as so are you.
truman capote could write drunk. ernest hemingway could write drunk. rimbaud could write drunk. you, however, cannot write drunk. delete your stupid fucking comment please. |

"i promised you i'd set them to verse so i'd always remember: that the meteorite..."
she sets to verse the meteorite/meteor/meteroid jingle as a mnemonic to distinguish the one from the others. that part seems to be one of the least controvertible parts of this song to interpret. |

a bottle of booze singing to elliott. it's so poignant when you know "the people you've been before that you don't want around anymore," and how with alcohol you can willingly suppress the potential of your past self (and the past is always painful to reflect upon when you realize you've lost potential... ironically i don't think elliott ever lost any of his) by drinking. |

jamisonlikewhat... what? not about molestation? are you in denial of the reality that fathers molest their children in general or just in this song? it points to molestion on almost every line of the song.
first off, the entire first verse is alluding to one event, ONE EVENT on april 12th, that took place in a car (when NO ONE was around), one in which isn't named because perhaps it is too vulgar and disgusting to be named in the song.
secondly, abandoning fathers are bad yes. it's a saddening and frustrating thing when a father leaves a mother to parent to raise a child, and truly that man IS a scumbag. but would that kind of behavior, do you honestly think, merit thoughts and wishes of a brutal and painful and graphic death?
thirdly, yes it is almost criminal that they should allow this SCUM to foster another child, but it is ultimately the girl's decision over what to do here. and that's what makes this song's theme even more gut-wrenching. |

| Black Box Recorder – Girl Singing In The Wreckage Lyrics
| 20 years ago

the verses' melodies evoke memories of the rolling stones' beast of burden, and are a perfect lyrical balance of suggestive subtlety without being too impenetrable.
the song, to me, slides between a metaphoric car crash (in the lyrics here, it is important to note that "my first kiss" is actually "my first car") involving the girl singing in the wreckage, as the refrain suggests, which underlies the theme of growing out of youth. the metaphor which encapsulates this theme resounds in the line "it's my primary instinct to protect the child", which cleverly utilizes a second meaning which alludes to the theme in the word "child". the metaphor is also evident in the imagery of torn dresses, the world smashing open, hitting the ground, ETC. |

i don't think so miss girlwholikesmusic. i think this song follows the traditional alkaline trio themes. the line "made for a bad lover's liver" just means that the person (presumably a girl) aggravated the speaker's voice. i guess it makes sense either way, but that's my two cents. yeah.. |
