| i really like this song. as with all their songs, it sounds so honest. but i dont understand it. in most of their songs, they sound like they're understanding and empathizing with whomever the song is about. but in this one, he almost sounds like he's saying "too bad its your problem sux to be you." especially with that line "and when you dream 17, I ain't there so I don't care. Cuz in all my dreams, I'm 23, and she's the girl right next to me." Like he's telling her harshly to move on and get over him, because he's moved on already. but then hat doesnt fit in with the last part where he runs back to her. i dunno. maybe he's talking about his past when he talks about the 17/23 thing, and then he realizes that after trying to shake her off for so long, in the end he needs her anyway. bittersweet, i dunno, | |

it's awesome. well, the musical puts more emphasis on the revolution part of the story and mroe on the mushy love part, but the book shows that the revolution is really important and an integral part of the story as well. but anyway, it's an excellent musical because you can really identify with all of hte characters even though they'r eall just a bunch of french dudes in some war over a century ago. the setting doesnt matter, the characters are so human that you can completely emphasize with their emotions and everything. and this song rocks. a very emotional song. |

i like this song a lot. im surprised that theres only one comment for it. its just such a nice mellow sweet song. reminiscing about stuff. i like this song because it emphasizes simplicity. least complicated. no drama or pretention or analysis necessary. no stupid formulas for how to get close to someone like those found in stupid girly mags and all. just be. im just a mirror of a mirror myself. i dont understand all the lyrics though...im not sure what the ring represents. my first instinct is to think wedding ring, but traditionally, the guy gives it. but theres stuff about hiding in this song. sitting in the house, and resisting and staying hidden. away from the street that love has already left. she doesnt feel ready yet...before i think she was one of the people included in the "boy and girl are holding hands in the street." but after she broke up with whoever she's singing to, the street got empty of love, and now shes hiding two stories above. and she doesnt want to go back to the street to reopen her wounds. she cant start clean slated and risk love and all that again as if nothing had happened, so therefore she's conscienciously objecting and dodging the love draft lol. so she has to learn to love again. but she sits there watching above it all, seeing hte kids of the next generation in the street doign what she had done, go through teh whole relationship heartbreak thing just like she had. but shes afraid to dive in again and tries to reason and analyze, but then realizes that love is the least complicated emotion, though its hard to learn again. its sweet. so thats my take on the song. someone want to expand, agree or contradict me? :) a great song |

i love this song. i love norah jones. because all of this stuff is just so honest and unpretentious. i liek her voice because its so sweet and mellow, not brassy or thick or overpoweringly showy or fakey breathy like a lot of pop princesses now. yeah. she's just plain candid. love her voice. and this song has great lyrics too! "heart is drenched in wine" thats such a powerful mental picture. it describes the emotion perfectly. and i can identify with this song a lot... "you'll be on my mind forever." i feel like i can sing this song, because of the lyrics and because her voice is so plain and simple that its on my level....like she's one of us, not some out of touch performer with a different realm of emotions. she just says "i honestly don't know." and thats it. no excuse making or analyzing. just i dont know. and i get a feeling of regret and mellow resignation from this song. and i like it. it's not all agressive and "oh baby, please take me back" or "id do anythign in the world to be with youuu" or anything debasing like that. she's just reflecting back on the past calmly, acknowledging her missed chance, and kind of observing it from a distance, almost in a dazed state. but even though im not totally flipping out and crying hysterically and stalking him, my heart is drenched in wine, he's going to be on my mind forever. |

i love all the crazy imagery/random words here. its amazing. i agree with everyone here so far. i think its about a guy and a girl who are really close friends, perhaps even grew up together. but then the girl leaves to find herself etc. but even though she left home, he's just saying that he'll always be there, whenever she decides to return. a safe homebase. so that even if she returns home jaded and disillusioned, he'll still be there waiting sort of. he still cares about her, even though he's gone beyond his grasp and maybe sorta outgrew him. my favorite part is: "Can you imagine no love, pride, deep-fried chicken Your best friend always sticking up for you even when I know you're wrong Can you imagine no first dance, freeze dried romance five-hour phone conversation The best soy latte that you ever had . . . and me" cuz its so sweet! this section of hte song first ofall shows that he knows her really well to know that she likes all these quirky things...this list represents a whole lifetime of memories between them growing up (in my mind). and its sweet because he lists all these tiny nice little things that he KNOWS that she'll miss away from home, and he tentatively puts himself at the very end of the list, sort of like an afterthought, hesitant wishful thinking. sweet:) anyway. thats my take on the song. love it. |

this is probably my favorite song from rent. it's SO sad. roger's so angry and hurt and basically just keeps illogically screaming at mimi to go away because he's afraid of loving her. and mimi just kind of calmly and gently tells him that he has to learn to love again, but he just keeps screaming at her and trying to block her out. it's really powerful, especially the ending. the instrumental works well. when roger is singing, the muic playing is rock music with a strong loud beat. but when mimi is singing, it's a nice mellow tune. its cool. and the harmonies at the end are so pretty. (whoever posted the lyrics to this song kinda botched up the ending there lol) at the end, mimi and about 5 other people all gently tell roger to start living and loving again, to stop being afraid. but he's so hurt and upset that he just kind of keeps blindly lashing out at them and panicking until the force of his anger and pain manages to drive all the people out of his room. made me cry. love this song! |

this is my absolute favorite song by them. it's sooo sweet. i mean, most peopel view death as a negative thing and beg and plead with their loved ones not to die. but here, even though she is dying and he loves her, he loves her enough to realize that this is the best thing for her, and is actually able to be HAPPY for her. that's ultimate love. the chorus is so gentle and resigned and beautiful. i love it. he's letting her go but is still connected to her. like magic. but then after that, there's the 2 big drum beats (remember, this is the drummer's song) where he gets to let it all out, and a loud catharsis of "sha lala..." where he vents his own emotions too, even after resigning himself mentally in the quiet chorus. because even though he knows it's for the best, he has his own anguish to deal with. but that too tapers off gently eventually, and that's the grieving process. she's gone, he deals, they're still connected. sooo sweet:) and i know this probably isnt about suicide, but whenever i felt suicidal, i loved this song, because it sounded like he understood me, and wouldn't condemn me if i died. i love this song. |

okay. i dont have a sob story. and my analysis is probably wrong, because it probably is all about the movie anyway. but the title "iris" makes sense to me. it's a part of a person's eye, and is unique to each person. it seems linked with identity, since people can be identified by their irises, like fingerprints. but also, eyes are supposed to be a window to your soul or whatever. so therefore, the title "Iris" makes sense...it is who he is, his person, his soul, and he's just honestly showing himself to her ("I just want you to know who I am.") as for the rest of the lyrics, i dont think that they require very much explanation at all. in fact, that's the whole point. honestly and sincerity are emphasized in this song. therefore, there arent too many pretentious metaphors or convoluted hidden meanings or anything. it's just saying "this is who i am, i love you. that's it." the simplicity and honesty makes this song beautiful, and that's why everyone can identify with it so well. a side note. personally, i identify with the line "you bleed just to know you're alive." i know this probably isnt what he meant, but...it's like he understands why i cut myself. that's all. great song, i love it. |

"Baby's black balloon makes her fly " almost sounds like it's out of a child's daydream...you know, how kids sometimes think that balloons can make you fly if you get enough of them...:P except this baby is special cuz her balloon actually makes her fly...except that it's black. sort of like how drugs are good cuz they (in your mind) give you the ability to fly and make you happy, but it has terrible black consequences. the balloon could also be seen as a shelter...you know, like a bubble world that she's floating inside of. kind of like her drugs also. when she's high, she's in her balloon floating above the world, immune to reality, even though the blackness is eating her up so that she cant see out (being stuck in this black floating balloon is almost like falling into a "hole in your life" that he narrowly escapes...which all ties together. the balloon/drugs is both protection and a prison to her). and maybe she is pregnant. i dont know. if she is, then the part about being inside a balloon would make sense as well, like a fetus in a "womb." more baby reference with "you're not thinking about tomorrow" because children are usually associated with the future. but i guess she's so blinded by hte blackness that she doesn't think about her baby, who she indirectly puts into the black balloon perhaps by taking drugs while she's pregnant. (sorry if this is getting all convoluted and incoherent and outlandish lol) "You know the lies they always told you And the love you never knew What's the things they never showed you That swallowed the light from the sun Inside your room " this verse ties in with the first part about hte black balloon. especially because they rhyme "womb" and "room." so, if the balloon is the same thing as the womb, then the room would be the same thing also. so. imagine her in her floating isolated in her black balloon again. so the lines in this verse explain how her balloon got so black. lack of love, and too many lies slowly made the balloon get darker and darker ("That swallowed the light from the sun Inside your room") until she got trapped in the balloon. so it could be about how people slowly cornered her until her life just sucked and she couldnt see a way out except for drugs to hide herself in. the darkening even makes sense in a purely druggie sense. at first, highs are great, and you dont need THAT much to get you high, and the drug makes you float without much of a price. but slowly, it gets more sinister as you get more and more addicted and stuff. so that parallels with the tinting of the balloon/swallowing of the sun. okay. sorry if i totally confused you. a few religious connotations too "But on your knees" "And angels fall without you there " "Or are you someone's prayer?" but i dont really know what to make of it all. except that maybe the singer is singing this in retrospect. so her getting colder COULD be her getting more and more distant as she gets more absorbed by the drug/usurping hole in her life. But i got more of a feeling that he was singing this AFTER she died, so that her getting colder was just that she died, and he was still living and going on, and thinks of her living on in spiritual terms now sorta. okay. thats my analysis. i love this song. the scenery created by the lyrics is so surreal and outlandish and beautiful. i wish i knew what figures in our culture eve6 was referring to by "thelma" "daria" and "vladimir" though (unless theyre totally random). it would make more sense then. does anyone know? but anyway. it's great. it's like he finds some great crazy treasure and doesn't know what to do with it and then finally takes it and cant part with it ever again. and the stars collide;) oh i love this song! |

| sigh...i love this song...the begining...the instrumental when its all mystic and magical sounding and whispery and sweet and sincere and soooo nice! ewan has such a sweet heart-melting voice and such a sincere expression when he sings lol. they sound so beautiful together. its gorgeous. im a usually a cynic but just like loserdork up there ^^, i realized i am SUCH a sucker for this lol. awww... ;) | |
