AFI has been my favorite band for years. I never heard Son of Sam until about three or four months ago. Now I think I like Son of Sam more. I wish they'd get together and make another CD.
As for the detailed description on what the songs mean, I've never really thought about that, which is odd because I'm always trying to interpret songs. I guess this song would be about going into the darkness, or night, forever because that's where he belongs. I don't know. There's more to it, but it would take me a while to figure it out, and I usually need a push in the right direction before I can fully understand a song. |

I love this song. I think it's my favorite on the CD. It has a nice sound and a great meaning, as all songs written by Davey Havok do. |

I agree with Princess |\/.\/| on almost everything. I think that he's saying that a friend who'll just tease him is better than one who will have sex with him. Her teasing goes so far, that Brian (or whomever) pressures her into having sex and they do.."stormy weather." Also, I think she IS pregnant because "a friend who bleeds is better," which refers to her period. It would be better if she wasn't pregnant, but since she isn't "bleeding," she is pregnant. Then she confessed that she passed the pregnancy test and is pregnant, but they will never have an abortion..or break up. When the day comes, their night of fun is over, and they have to face the real world. |

Really pretty song. I wish they said the poem(?) louder though. It's so beautiful and you can barely here it..It's the only part that talks about the sun and stuff too, so it's important to the song. |

Grr, I just wrote a lot of stuff for this song and it got deleted. I'll just write it over...So, as you can see, my name is from this song.."Smile injection." I think this song is all about drugs and stuff. Drugs cause you to experience many moods.."Swing through sadness, tears of joy." You go from being sad to happy. Maybe they curse the sunlight because that means they have to leave because the night is over and that's when they do all their drugs and stuff. Arsenic is a white powder that kills weeds, so it could be confused for as a drug..or used as a drug, since people use ketamie as a drug and it's an animal tranquilizer. "Drink the madness, smoke so coy"..self explanitory. Drink alcohol, which causes madness and chaos, the smoke is so beautiful and it shyly and inticingly makes it way up to this beauty. Your smiles are fake because they were injected from drugs, such as heroin. Your blood serum will be all messed up because of the drugs, which you should've forced yourself not to take, but you didn't..your will was destroyed. The rest of the song is probably about what people have said about the nephilim..or, as I saw it before I heard about all of that..He doesn't do all the drugs and stays in the corner by himself. Everyone goes on with their life, doing drugs and shit, without him. He stays hidden away and grows wings because he is the only angelic one. A positive song is heard by him and it grows wings too because it's also angelic. The other people will try to go to heaven with their broken wings. Davey is like the devil because he is the outcast..even though he's the good one..and he's meant to have a better life, since he does nothing wrong. He will find his place in a better world..or in heaven or whatever. I'm probably wrong though. |

I forgot to say why I think the title is what it is. I think either God wasn't there for the day, so Davey had to tell everyone what to do about ending it all and hiding evidence..or God wasn't there while all the wars were going on. In the Bible, it says the world was created in seven days, which doesn't seem too possible, so I've been told that maybe a "day" is really a year or even a century. So, in this case, a "day" could last as long as all the wars caused by religion. I don't know, that's just what I think.. |

So far, most of you have been saying that this song is either about witches being burned at the stake or just that everyone's their own person and if you don't like it, deal with it. I went to the site xakitox posted and read the article. It said that ANYONE who commited heresy was burned at the stake. This was accomplished by questioning the Catholic belief. Too many people were killed and they were mostly women. Women who didn't fit in..."outcasts and other suspicious persons" Both of these views (witches being burned at the stake and people being their own person) are correct then. Witches were burned because they didn't follow the Catholic belief and people trying to be their own person were burned because they were different and "outcasts." This song is very meaningful and makes us realize how it would be to be killed for being yourself. |

The first AFI CD I got was Black Sails in the Sunset and I always loved the way this song sounded. I never really thought about it's meaning though, but all of the interpretations before fit the song very well and I agreed completely with BlackBasilSupply (that interpretation fit perfectly with the hidden track, Midnight Sun, because at the end of the old testament, it talks about the sun..I won't get into that) until pravdawglerz and SexierThanSox gave their meanings. I think it's about the Crusades and such. There were four of them and they were all over religion and then there were more battles over Protestantism and Catholicism later. It formed a pattern of murder and death. I think the vine stuff is he's caught in the midst of it all and he doesn't want other people to stay with him.."Go ascend with ivy, climbing. Ignore and leave for me the headstone crumbling behind." So he wants everyone to rise and be stronger than the wars, instead of trying to "untangle" him and to ignore him and leave him for his own death/fate. Mother Earth cries because of the wars fought on her ground, but he laughs at the stupidity of it all..as do I. Seriously, fighting over religion is kind of stupid..But this laughter and his hatred towards it all causes innocent people/angels to cry. Then, stop the fighting and end it all beauitfully. He won't tell anyone who ended it. People look back at the past before the wars were ended, which were dark days and weren't supposed to be remembered. Those who ended the battles beautifully didn't hide the wars as beautifully since people found out about them, which they shouldn't have.."hidden so shamefully." He'll still remember it all and feel the violence come back as people find out about it all. He doesn't want to laugh at the stupidity again as he sees people realizing how horrible the past was and his own mother crying over the tragic events. The last line is saying that God is the reason for all of this. All of the wars were started because of people's beliefs in God. I could explain it more, but this is basically what I think. Beautiful song. |
