of Montreal – Gronlandic Edit Lyrics 15 years ago
I thought the lyrics about giving your heart to god was hillarious. That's a genuine LOL at my house one afternoon. I find the way the guys sings annoying, but it's almost like he does it intentionally, maybe even to be annoying, and artifical. I've only heard this song so far, but these guys sound pretty intelletucal.

I find it interesting that he(or the character he is singing about) wants to give his heart to a god (I assume Christianity because you devote yourself to Christ, that is heart/soul) but he can't because he considers all the people in the church losers. I think that's a normal feeling for people today, looking at the church and thinking "Man if there were cooler people there I might believe." But I honestly don't think Christinaity will ever be something that is cool. I am a CHristian and it's not always the coolest way. Yes, there are psycho people and confused people within the church. IT's a part of the whole. And yes, there are losers in the church.

On a larger scale, the song seems to analyze the post-college stress syndrome of moving back in with your parents or your friends, trying to find a purpose in life. Your only leaving the hosue to go to the grocery store and then your like "Uhh, what other task are there to be done other than checking my facebook and eating?" It's like you dream for about 20 minutes about the fact that by picking English as a major that you abandoned picking up a trade that you could use for money. "Why wasn't I a marketing major, or a plummer?"

The Drones – Shark Fin Blues Lyrics 15 years ago
Sometimes I wonder if music is a literal manifestation of pain(or any other emotion, depending on the mood) via sound. In terms of a concert, it is the artist's oppritunity to express the ocean of pain that's been welling up inside of him or her. When I saw the drones, I saw this on stage, almost haunting. I don't know exactly what the answer to people's pain is, maybe a person on stage is a cathartic ordeal. My fix for any pain, a soul fix, is to pray to Christ. The soul cannot just not say anything, like a concert of pain, prayer to Jesus is a inner concert/conversation of asking and hoping, faith.

The build ups in this song are amazing, as are the genuity of the singer's voice.

Pixies – Silver Lyrics 15 years ago
I wouldn't exactly suggest making it a college class, but I think it would be cool if there were people devoted to interpreting what exactly is happening in songs like this one. From a philosophic perspective, what exactly is likeable about a gutiar that sounds like it's being played on a rainy day in a barn, mixing with this big drum beat, mixed with these people's weary, jaded voices altogether make? There's something going on with the Pixies, something they are trying to say, intentionally sad and desparing. I don't know what it is, but I think this sounds of this song influences the sounds of the 90's. Not to try to deconstruct the sounds of other bands into being influenced by the Pixies, but I am curious to what feeling the Pixies are creating and what kind of feeling that would leave other bands wanting to feel like. It's no so much that other bands are unoriginal by this kind of offbeat country, weary voiced sound, but it's that they connect with the pixies music and want to recreate the feeling or emotion of the song. "Hey we are not trying to be like the Pixies, we just feel like the pixies, therefore our music may sound similar." Therefore what is the feeling and meaning of the Pixies sound that was so contagious to music.

One of the problems I have with listening to music is that there isn't much dialouge to why we feel the way we do when we listen to it. Why do I like the Pixies? It's much more than a like, there's something that connects in the heart with the sounds of the music. Normally we like things that make us happy, I do not think the Pixies make me happy, rather they can at time reinforce any numbness that I feel in life. So it's like having a conversation with somebody frustrated with life.

I assume that Rolling Stone, SPIN, AP and other music magazines were origianlly the people who explained what and how the music was making us feel and why we feel a certain way when we feel it. However, there is no dialouge of how music makes us feel and why we feel it. At least, I don't think there is, and I would desire an outlet or at least other people telling us why my soul feels a way whenever you hear the big "BOOM" in "Silver."

Sigur Rós – Glósóli Lyrics 15 years ago
It seems there is something deeper in the soul that this song connects with. I'm sure Melville wrote about in Moby Dick. Or at least that's what I remember about Moby Dick. There are times in that book where he parallels the ocean to man's soul and the things that we can see and the things we cannot see. We can see things like people's faces and hear people's words but sometimes feelings are unexplainable.

I can only imagine being on a ship sailing in the Atlantic like Ismael is in Moby Dick can compare to some of the beyond the surface feelings that are brought up when I hear this song. I guess it also brings to mind the whale. The whale is something that is huge and under the sea, we cannot see it, but it is there. The discussion of whales brings to mind the environmental movement of the 80's that tried to save whales, which in some ways can trivalize the hugeness of whales. I need to find some Moby Dick quotes.

Arcade Fire – Neighborhood #3 (Power Out) Lyrics 15 years ago
Power is out in the heart of man! How do you fix that problem?

There is something wild about this song, like an emergency. It's something that you would feel after a funeral if the people didn't mourn as violently and enough as you feel they should have. I normally hear and think of this album as a post-funeral catharsis. As if you didn't mourn correctly in the week of mourning, so you must do it a year later. I saw in a interview that Winn Butler said once "My generation is desensitized." If you are desensitized, then your not able to respond as you should to very real things. Death is one of those things Americans aren't really sure how to respond to, or well, probably any person that ever lived. No person that ever lived knows how to respond to death.

To hear Winn Butler yell and sing wildly in this song means something. I wonder if he is trying to show us how to deal with the real. I'm curious to know what that very deep roaring sound in this soug is as well. It sounds almost like a chainsaw, but I don't think that Arcade Fire are trying to say something destructive, I think it's the kind of noise that you hear in your head when something horrible happens. Like trying to yell after you get punched in the stomach. Or some kind of subterrianian pain that begins in your stomach. Like the way that thunder rumbles the earth.

The power is out in the heart of man, the power is on in the cities and houses. Would turning off electricity help turn on the heart of man?

Arcade Fire – Rebellion (Lies) Lyrics 15 years ago
The video for this song reminds me so much of old Smashing Pumpkins scenery. It's like Smashing Pumpkins weather in this video. There's no such thing as Smashing Pumpkins weather, the little magical beating of the drum and the way the girl's feet are glowing are like some kind of magical realism.

The thing I like about this whole feel that I get from the video from this song is a kind of oldish feel, like a community of people who all love New England weather and walking around in big groups in November. I'm not exactly sure what the purpose of this is, but I'd like to meet those people wherever those people are walking around.

In terms of the entire feel of the Funeral album, and how this song fits in there. It's like this song is a burst of self-determiniation and hope to move forward after a night of staring at the wall trying to figure out what to do. A distracted mind reads something in a book that inspires enough hope to lead an small group of people out of thier shame and into the light of the cloudy November sky. They read the mustard seed verse in Matthew. We can overcome grief, shame, and despair. And we will sing with our voices fully to purge our souls of all despair, fully sing, fully sing. So the neighbors can hear.

I think interesting how he say's he's 23 in this song. It's like the age when you start making choices that are important. It;s like your thinking, well, if i went back to grad school, I could be a teacher, or if I rented out a cabin I could be a writer. If I got on with a good company I could make stable income. Or I could move to Vancouver or move to England or Mississipi. So many possibiliites and complexities.

The Mighty Mighty Bosstones – The Impression That I Get Lyrics 16 years ago
Well, if you've ever felt like every choice you make will go wrong, I think this is the mood he's hinting at in this song. Regardless he asks a question that is really important:

Have you ever been close to tragedy
Or been close to folks who have
Have you ever felt a pain so powerful
So heavy you collapse

It's like he just asks that question and leaves it there.

It's May of 2008, probably about 10 years after I first heard this song. I'm blown away by the lyrics. I never heard them when I was younger.

Modest Mouse – Dashboard Lyrics 16 years ago
I saw somebody mention earlier that they can't relate to upbeat-ness of this song, a contrast to the old Modest Mosue sound. They attribute this to Issac's soberness and possibly that he is getting more optimistc.

If you watch the video it's great cause he's with older men, the old sailors with beards, sitting around telling stories. It's like he's found a community of people like himself, who in fact, have the same problems of self-despair and failure. Except these are old men. Personally I don't always connect myself to older men, I feel like all their opinions are outdated and dry.

However I wonder if the seeming "optimism" of this song is more of Modest Mosue's realization that their despair is not completely unique to the universe and SUPRISE! there are older men who have similar feelings. If we believe our misery is unique then in some ways we are deceiving ourselves in some ways. Misery is very personal however, people experience pain in different ways.

Just a side note, but I wonder if Issac read Moby Dick, cause the whole idea of sailors talking about life in a bar, telling stories is one of the great themes of that book.

The Avett Brothers – Hard Worker Lyrics 16 years ago
My back was straight today.

I wonder sometimes, does hard work straight out tight muscles, like a tight back or does hard work make it worse? I believe hard work can loosen and strengthen muscles so you can be a stronger worker.

The working man's disease to me is the man who doesn't know what to do with himself on a Monday afternoon at 11am. He's so used to working that he's restless and must find something to occupy himself until the day off is finished. So it could be the avett brothers are suggesting a balance where a man knows what to do on a day off and maybe knows what he should do on a monday at 11am at home---a day off--maybe they are asking "What does a working man do when he doesn't have work to distract him?" Work in some ways can be a way to procrastinate a difficult choice or avoid problems, sometimes.

Modest Mouse – Doin' the Cockroach Lyrics 16 years ago
I was in heaven
I was in hell
Believe in neither
But fear them as well

I can't get over how he says that last line, meaning I can't believe the intensity that he says it. You can hear the genuinty in his voice and a sense of pain/anger/frustration there as well. The first time I heard this song I couldn't stop thinking about how he sang as if he'd expereinced a type of hell on earth and heaven on earth. However he throws that line in there that he believes in neither.

It's like you can experience a bit of hell here on earth because of pain. He's bringing into the question of the eternal existence of the soul. Does heaven and hell exist? It's easy to say that you don't believe in heaven or even to say that you do believe in heaven, but to struggle with the reality of each is something most agnostics, atheists and Christians will wrestle with. If heaven does in fact exisit well, the Christian might want to pursue it harder(maybe like a true pilgrim, not just a church goer), the agnostic realize he can quit riding the fence and the atheist, well, he can decide something.

Also in this you see people experience very painful things on earth, that can be described as going through hell. I'm a Christian and I believe that there are things taht people go through here on earth that are very tramatizing, and even if you are a Christian it is not a simple thing to deal with.

Guster – Window Lyrics 17 years ago
There is somewhere is Isaiah where it says that God carried the people. I wonder if the guys are writing about this verse. (Alright I googled Isaiah and carry you and it is Isasidh 46) One of the pastors I know did a journal on this. He said it was how the people who worshipped idols had to carry their idols around. It was a burden. Similar to how a person of faith can try to operate a church today without praying to God or having God in it at all. Like a self-supported religion instead of a real faith in God doing the work. Churches today busy themseleves with activities to make them look like nothing is wrong. When will we realize that God carries a church and not church activities? A church is awkward and self-conscious without God sustaininingn it. So that's what I thought of when I heard carry you.

Maybe we might be scared of what we think God is telling us to do.

Oh how I want to be found in Him. I read a sermon today and I want to be found in Him. I don't want an insensitive heart. I want to know Jesus and I'm tired of being religious. My heart gets jaded, banal, bored and spiteful with this world. I get irritated with people I live. I don't love pepole, and I can't get over my own thoughts and I fantisize about how I might make myself better, richer and more efficient. I dream of a simple mind, one that doesn't think of itself so much. One that jesus might have had, thinking only of God. One that thinks of the present moment, that one thing that you can't get back. I am only 23 once. Can somebody please start showing me how to follow Jesus? Can we all worship God and enlarge our weak shrivled up souls?

Brand New – Jesus Christ Lyrics 17 years ago
Do you believe you are missing out?

This is a real verse that many of us feel on Saturday nights alone. Could it be we understand that we are feeling sad, melancholy and unreponsive at 5pm on a Saturday night as a junior in high school, with no one calling our cell phone or landline, and we dream of social sitauations and situations and possibliites that are not happening to us, but someone else. This longing for a social scene.

A scene that fulfills all our insecutires, longings. Something only God could do.

I find this verse out of place among the referenfces to Christ. It's like he was sitting at home lonley and opened his bible to the gospel of Luke and struggled, uncensored through the verses. SOmetimes we censor what goes through our heads when we read the Bible.

Don't cesnor yourself, life is realer than you think.

Radiohead – Fitter Happier Lyrics 17 years ago
I popped in a Radiohead album the other night while writing letters home. I listened to "Fitter Happier." This song doesn't have any music(except a light piano in the back) but the only noise you hear is a voice talking. The voice is computerized, and it is Radiohead's Thom Yorke who talked into his Mac computer to make the song. The song is off of OK Computer. I found a quote by Thom Yorke about how he recored the song: "The reason 'Fitter Happier' exists is 'cos of mental background noise. Some days you're in a disturbed state and it moves to the front." It's like all the cliches and messages and slogans that are fed through our heads in our daily lives. It seems, as Yorke says, we resort to these messages and these messages move to the front. Of course these messages look to originate from pop culture. This "mental background noise" could be like our subconscious. Maybe these messages are our motivations for going on when your waking up 30 minutes late and you forgot to send your professor an email about how your paper is late or how you don't have any milk left for ceral. Then what is left, messages and slogans. There is a verse in Psalms that says we should hide the word of God in our hearts. It seems to me that when we memorize Scripture it is not a legalistic pursuit of winning a biblical trivial pursuit game, but instead uningraining or pop culture, lies of commercial slogans(which are normally shallow and impractical) and replacing it with a parable by Christ, a struggle of David or Paul's words to pray when anxious. That way we can weed out what is American, popular, "healthy," or normal and put in what God has for us. Much more can be said about this, but I think I've said enough.

Also, I think when he talks about the camera it seems every 19 year old who listens to music owns a camera and begins taking pictures of many vintage items. It's a hip thing to do, but it seems to be wanting something. They are using technology to capture beauty. Sometimes holding these pictures up as truth, as many 19 year old indie kids have aspirations of being photographers. There's nothing wrong with that, but it is a old soul longing (for truth) for that beautiful sunset or even that old metal sign you took a picture of. Yet again, the answers are found in that Bible.

It seems he wants truth. I think he is mad at the modern world. the modern world tells us that the bible holds no truth. The modern world tells us that we should industrialize everything. We should lean heavily on technolgoy, and put televisions on our walls. I think he is refering to the walls and flowers as how our entire expereince is mostly made up with television and not a real expereince outside in the hillsides of flowers. I think he longs for the truth of the Bible, that it would give him solid answers to so many postmodern questions. The old soul had questions and were answered by the Bible soildly, where the New World Order is very impersonal and resembles something dead without any emotion. For the experience and emotion cannot be found on a stale television.
For the truth he wants can be found in the Bible.

Doubting Thomas is almost worth crying to then we hear the Old English intrumental type song that makes me feel as if I were hearing a story from my grandfather then we hear Helena which rounds out strong which pounds a fist on table.

Switchfoot – Happy Is A Yuppie Word Lyrics 18 years ago
"A year ago I had a late night talk with a friend who stated the quote: "Happy is a yuppie word." I stayed up after he left, turned off the TV war and wrote a song about our happy, yuppie world. Turns out, Bob Dylan was the one being quoted.

"In 1991, when Rolling Stone interviewed Dylan on the occasion of his 50th birthday, he gave a curious response when the interviewer asked him if he was happy. He fell silent for a few moments and stared at his hands. 'You know,' he said, 'these are yuppie words, happiness and unhappiness. It's not happiness or unhappiness, it's either blessed or unblessed.'”

For me this song is the heart of the record, pumping blood out to the limbs and fingers and mouth and such. And maybe every lyric on the record might be needed and true, still this song has kept everything alive for us. We had the privilege of opening for Wilco a few years past- I would like to dedicate this song to the incredible music that they have given all of us down through the years."

I'm reading Steppenwolf by Herman Hesse for one of my classes. I'm about 60 pages into it and this song poped into my head as soon as I got to one of the quotes. In Steppenwolf, Hesse talks about the sheer torture of idleness and "contentment" that rides between pain and pleasure. The character of Steppenwolf represents the half man half wolf that Hesse portrays the middle class man is. A man who on one side loves contentment and painless comfort and on the other side loves to romp through a house with muddy shoes on, not in destruction, but to live intensely and and with feeling. He abhors the lukewarm middle class life of medicority, of neitehr extreme.

I remember listening to this song while laying in my bed when I was a freshmen in high school which was a good while back. The strings are absoltuely beautfiul in this song. I always got pictures in my head of an empty theatre when I listened to this song, especially at night when the imagination runs wild.

I think he's talking about some kind of spiritual expereince. "Thorn in the side" is a reference to Paul's curious thorn that plauged him thoughout his letters. He also says prison, which was where Paul was when he wrote many of his letters. Perhaps he is having a realization of how weak he is in comparison to God, as if he were Paul humbled. Or even when he says "I don't need nobody" perhaps that is implying he doesn't need any other human's approval, his weakness before God is sufficent.

It inspires me to pursue relatinships with other people and smash my televisoin to bits and pieces. Not really but, seriously, how many times do I walk to class and ignore the person that walks right past me? How many times do I pretend that I didn't see my friend Jeff because I had to get to class and I was goin to be late? How many times do I forfeit relationship for reading or even television? I believe our difficulty to find meaning in our lives today roots from our lack of deep relationship with each other. I want to see you people arguing to talk to each other and discuss why you think this song is about what it is about or what its not about. Just because you listen doesnt mean you have to agree.

This song means sitting in my room by myself as a 6th grader in 1997. IT means recording it onto my tape player and listeing to it over and over procrastinating my pre-algerbra homeowork.

"and poured cement, lamented and assured
to the lights and towns below
faster than the speed of sound
faster than we thought we'd go, beneath the sound of hope"

I think this part of the songs is one of my favorite 20-30 seconds in all of the music I have ever listened to. I always have a million thoughts/feelings/longings running through my head when I hear this. The ironic thing about it is I still have many of the same things going through my head as a jr. in college as I did when I was 12. I think the central thing going through my head when I hear this part is the need for a friend, because most of the music I listen to is when Im alone, so many times music is a replacement for a friend, in hopes that this need for relationship and connection with people will only last temporarly and ill find a friend, yet I'm never want this song to end.

"is it they fear the pain of death or could it be they fear the joy of life"
This reminds me of all the people who cried out against Jesus. The people knew that they might be killed if they did not yell out for Barabas, yet they forfeited the joy of life when they betrayed jesus. Do we forfeit joy in life when we become judgemental, an act reserved for God, rather than man?
