the line "i still hear trains at night, when the wind is right" absolutely fills me with this intense feeling. cos when i was younger, i lived where you could hear the train whistle at night in summer, and john k. lives in the same city that i do. that memory of the trains is so vivid, and then i heard this song, and i just freaked. i was like "oh my god! he remembers the trains too!!!" |

this song is so personal to me. i live in winnipeg, where john k. and the rest of them are from, and the line "the strangers whose faces i know" reminds me of going to see them play when they were just "the band with the old bass player from propagandhi". it reminds me of the whole hardcore scene in winnipeg. i barely know anyone in the scene, and i know that no one knows me, but if i was to see one of them on the streets, we'd recognize each other.
and the lines about the city fit perfectly. john is always talking about how great winnipeg is to the people who've lived there all their life, but how its slowly dying. this song deals with that too. the weakerthans are the only band whos music fits the scenery when i'm driving around the city. |

k, to justanotherkid, what the hell are you talking about, "they need to learn how to play instruments"? you obviously know nothing about music or how to play instruments yourself. Converge is one of the most technical bands out there.
and as far as jake's voice goes, the guy is bi polar, he uses his music to express his feelings, and his voice is another instrument used to convey his sadness. when i hear this song, i want to give him a hug! |
