The "no time" lyric sounds like it's sung by one of the guys from Menomena, but I don't think it is...

The Antlers – Bear Lyrics 16 years ago
I agree almost entirely with ehat's comment. JC may have a point that it does come off as a bit dismissive of others' opinions, but his moronic response ironically suggests that he believes ehat is not equally as entitled to post his thoughts.

The reason I'm replying is simply to point out that most of the quibbles from these comments can be resolved here: http://pitchfork.com/news/35845-rising-the-antlers/ or here: http://www.antlersmusic.com/linernotes.pdf

Peter Silberman says very clearly in the Pitchfork interview that he was involved in a painful relationship with someone who had cancer, but doesn't say if she actually died in the end or if just the relationship "figuratively" died--or both, I suppose. His unwillingness to provide more detail makes me think someone actually died. And for those who doubt that an over-arching subject of the album is cancer (yes, *literal* cancer), you should read the liner notes in the second link, or simply take another look at the album cover. I think ehat correctly points out that although literal cancer is being discussed, the issues surrounding can be (and were probably intended to be) applied to issues unrelated to physical health or even relationships altogether. The ambiguities present throughout the entire album are what I find most haunting about it.

The Shins – Saint Simon Lyrics 21 years ago
I think this is an open rejection of religion by The Shins. I feel like the "texts" might be referring to scripture, and maybe even the "nursery rhymes" have two meanings. The way the song shifts moods makes me feel like he's saying that "Mercy" (or religion) can be very comforting and can make you feel warm, but he'd rather not give into that, so he has to step into the night (the dark) where answers aren't so evident or picture perfect. Could be wrong, but that's my take on it.

Guster – Happy Frappy Lyrics 22 years ago
There certainly could be some deep, hidden meaning to this song, but I read somewhere once (maybe even on Guster's own website) that the lyrics to this song are completely random. Brian was making fun of Adam for singing about "Simple sentiments whisked away by anxious steel wool." I doubt Guster would write a song with absolutely no lyrical value, but I know that they have made attempts to focus more on lyrics as their albums progressed--and this song was on their first album.

Dave Matthews Band – The Last Stop Lyrics 23 years ago
I could easily be wrong... and I know in the studio version he definitely says "Good," but if you listen closely to the Chicago version it sounds like he's saying "Nailing God to a tree." It makes sense, too... nailing Jesus to a "tree" (the cross), then begging for forgiveness... I dunno just an idea.

Amber311, those lyrics are from a version of "Captain".
