This song has very personal meaning to me. To me it's about a dear friend of mine I have/had, yet she was never around when I needed her. Though nothing romantic ever really aspired, I nonetheless felt really close to her. One day she dropped out of school and moved in with her boyfriend who lived 'miles away.' That was almost 7 months ago and I still sometimes think of her. When I do, this song is really comforting. Also, the video seems to have been taylor made to this scenario in my life. If you want to check it out, goto www.launch.com NOTE: Just today I regained contact with the girl in this text. However I wrote this as if I still hadn't seen her becasue I feel I could express how the song touched me better this way. |

First, to all the people who are saying to stop analysing the lyrics, maybe I should remind you that this site is SONGMEANINGS.NET!!! If you don't like it, then check out www.go-fuck-yourself.com! With that out of the way, I want to say that at songfacts.com, the webmaster says that this song is about a girl who buys herself a stairway to heaven and when she gets there she finds her life has no meaning. However, since there is no source and no one else seems to have put that down as the official meaning, I'm going to assume that that meaning is the webmaster's own personal thoughts. Now I am going to tell you what I think the song is about. There's a lady who's sure all that glitters is gold And she's buying a stairway to heaven. When she gets there she knows, if the stores are all closed With a word she can get what she came for. Ooh, ooh, and she's buying a stairway to heaven. (I think it means by saying, "She's buying a stairway to heaven," it's saying that the girl is buying her way to high society, avoiding sins that a poor person may involve themself in, such as crime and drugs. The rest of the verse is expressing how confident she is in the power of wealth.) There's a sign on the wall but she wants to be sure 'Cause you know sometimes words have two meanings. In a tree by the brook, there's a songbird who sings, Sometimes all of our thoughts are misgiven. Ooh, it makes me wonder, Ooh, it makes me wonder. (I think this verse is saying that when she gets to heaven, the sign says "Heaven." But she is finding out that heaven can be eternal paradise or something you fill your life with in material objects. The songbird continues to express this point) There's a feeling I get when I look to the west, And my spirit is crying for leaving. In my thoughts I have seen rings of smoke through the trees, And the voices of those who standing looking. Ooh, it makes me wonder, Ooh, it really makes me wonder. (I don't quite understand what the second part of this verse means, but I think the first part Plant is singing from the perspective of someone in the communist block and is looking west to freedom and democracy. Once again stressing the point that it is easier for the rich to get into heaven.) And it's whispered that soon if we all call the tune Then the piper will lead us to reason. And a new day will dawn for those who stand long And the forests will echo with laughter. (Unlike what most people think of the piper being God, I think the peiper is supposed to be evil and temptation. I believe R. Plant got the imagery from the Pide Piper where the piper plays a tune and all the children follow him out of town and the parents never see them again. Then its saying that if you stand your ground and don't follow him, the forests will echo with laughter.) If there's a bustle in your hedgerow, don't be alarmed now, It's just a spring clean for the May queen. Yes, there are two paths you can go by, but in the long run There's still time to change the road you're on. And it makes me wonder. (I think this verse is fairly straight forward. The spring clean for the May Queen is saying you can make a clean start in life and that in the long run you can change the path of life you're on.) Your head is humming and it won't go, in case you don't know, The piper's calling you to join him, Dear lady, can you hear the wind blow, and did you know Your stairway lies on the whispering wind. (Our heroine is beginning to hear the piper's tune and Robert Plant is trying to tell her that you have to find your own path in life and can't just be a follower. ie: the wind) And as we wind on down the road Our shadows taller than our soul. There walks a lady we all know Who shines white light and wants to show How everything still turns to gold. And if you listen very hard The tune will come to you at last. When all are one and one is all To be a rock and not to roll. (In the end it seems that our dear lady unfortunately follows the piper, most likely to the depths of the underworld. On the way she is showing others how wonderful riches are. The second half stresses the final meaning of this song: "And if you listen very hard/The tune will come to you at last./When all are one and one is all/TO BE A ROCK AND NOT TO ROLL!" To stand your ground and be your own person no matter how rich or poor you may be.) And she's buying a stairway to heaven. (I think it should be,"And she's buying a stairway to "heaven".") One final note: If anyone here ever meets Robert Plant, don't ask him what this song means, cause he won't tell you. He wants everyone to find their own meaning in it. You have to ask him what it means to him! That's the only way you're ever gonna get an answer out of him. |
