I love this song.. I like how he sings it rather melodramatically, uncertain almost...makes you really see how insane the guy is. Obviously it's about a father who is taken away to the funny farm, and of course he does't like it there. So he escapes. The guy choking outside makes him think how lucky he is, but then he gets chased so he isn't lucky. Poor guy. |

As for SOAD themselves, well I agree with Im Iranian.. they are animists, which is basically summed up by "spirit moves thru all things." Heh heh. I love this song too, but I'd have to disagree whith monogroid when you say "sometimes gentlemen too" doesn't fit... It goes rather well with the whole thing where Orgy pretends to be (or at least is amused by people who think they are) gay.
I think this song is about style and fashion.. Wanting to fit in so that people will like you (hence "and all the ladies want you, and sometimes gentlemen too"). Perhaps the "bring me back the time" is referring to how over the years the styles change, different decades were known for different trends in fashion.
People often say they don't like this song but that's just silly, it's great. |

I think it's about natural selection, with the example of a girl who switched cliques or social classes, went from a good girl to a bad girl.
the part about " Dainty socialite she changed her point of view now she's bad, can't hide it/ I think she really liked all the things that she learned" I think is referring to her going from her nice clean rich circle of friends to her street-living other friends.

I heard from a book on the Beatles that Charles Manson thought that the Beatles were angels telling him to kill black people or whatever (see Fnord's post), and he was inspired by Helter Skelter and also the Piggy song by the Beatles (which he interprited to be about how blacks are pigs or something stupid). Anyways, Manson killed some black actress- I forgot her name, sorry-- and wrote "helter skelter" on the wall in her blood. Creepy creepy man. Nifty nifty song. |

It's about high school, that much should be obvious. The line "you traded in your high school ring, to get away from the pom pom boys and the jockstrap girls" is referring to how (in the 60s I believe) in high schools when a couple was "engaged" they would give each other "high school rings," or somesuch thing. Also, the girls would sometimes wear their boyfriend's jacket alot of the time, hence the pom pom boys/jockstrap girls. Any fool knows it's normally jockstrap boys/pom pom girls. |
