A Perfect Circle – Orestes Lyrics 21 years ago
I did this song for my character analysis in Theatre. My asshole instructor told us NOT to do a song, because the characters in songs aren't fully developed. He said that if anyone did a song, no matter who good a writer they were, chances were slim they'd get a passing grade.

So I did this song, and I put the lyrics and referred to them often in my oral presentation. I got an A+. I'll never forget that look of amazement. And man, he hated me for the rest of the semester..

I always thought it was about not taking responsibility for what we do to our planet...

System of a Down – ATWA Lyrics 21 years ago
It's about Manson. It took me awhile to get that, but it's not just the title that tells that.

Hey you, see me, pictures crazy,
All the world I've seen before me passing by,
I've got, nothing, to gain, to lose,
All the world I've seen before me passing by

In pictures, Manson looks crazy. You see these pictures and assume you know he's crazy. Being in prison is like time standing still; though you see and hear what's going on outside, you aren't a part of it. And the last line, Manson has nothing, obviously. He's where he wants to be. He has often referred to prison as home, because that's where he's spent the majority of his life. Some people think that the murders were only to get him back into prison for good.

You don't care about how I feel,
I don't feel it anymore

Seriously, I think everyone can relate to this.

Hey you, are me, not so pretty,
All the world I've seen before me passing by,
Silent my voice, I've got no choice
All the world I've seen before me passing by

Manson's always said that eveyone's got a little of him in them. I mean, he's an icon of evil in this society. And the second line could refer to two things. First, Manson's always wanted to be a musician, but he could never make it. OR this could refer to nobody being able to understand him.

I get it. I don't really understand why people try to refute it. Granted, you can twist a song into your own personal meaning, and that's all well and good, but read the interviews and articles. They've said it's about ATWA.

Tonic – Take Me As I Am Lyrics 21 years ago
I think the correct lyric is

"I wanna let you know I'm still learning how to love again and stop hurting"

I first thought it was lonely too, but it kinda doesn't make much since...

A Perfect Circle – Magdalena Lyrics 21 years ago
I always assumed it was about Mary Magdalene... "overcome by your moving temple" Movie temples are primarily Wiccan, and I believe I read somewhere that Mary Magdalene was Wiccan... "a dollar at a time"... Prostitution comes to mind... but it could be a number of things. Why couldn't the song just be about a man who falls in love with Mary Magdalene, and decides if he has to pay for her every night, he'll do so just to have her. *shrugs* What does it matter anyway?

A Perfect Circle – Orestes Lyrics 21 years ago
To me, it's about the greek tragedy. "pull me into your perfect circle" The Oresteia, by Aeschylus is one of the first plays written, and back in Greece, there arenas were outside, with a giant circle in the ground, with thrusts seating 3/4th of the way around, and a skene 1/4th of the way in the back. The chorus would enter through parados on the side of the skene and chant around the circle while the actors played on the skeme, which was like a small house where they'd change, with a small deck where they acted.

Just my thoughts.

Orestes wanted to feel numb... he didn't want to feel the anger, the stress, the fear... and above all, he didn't want to love his mother anymore. "one more medicated peaceful moment"... He wanted to be numb so he could kill her and get it over with.

He came back to town with an urn and claimed it was Orestes, and went to see Aegisthus (Clytemnestra's lover, who helped her kill Agamemnon and device a plan to kill Orestes) and slayed him. Clytemnestra realized that this was her son and begged for her life, but he killed her as well... Then the Furies went after him and drove him mad. He fled to Athens and was tried and aquitted of the murders, then became King of Argos and some other places... But he was still insane.

Theatre takes its toll. *is weary*

If you're interested, I suggest looking up "The Oresteia" or "Agamemnon"... Or even better, Aeschylus, Sophocles, or Euripides, the playwrites themselve. They all wrote about Orestes, however, they're vastly different.

All songs can be interpreted differently. Take this as you will.
