To me this song is about a man who is hounded by his past and no one will let him move on. The first verse is all about how the things he's done (commited a crime, done drugs; the song doesn't specify) have caused people to lose trust in him. The last line of the first verse "Jesus, won't you fucking whistle / something but the past and done?" means "Why can't we move on: stop dwelling on things that have passed." The chorus "Why can't we not be sober.." refers to how he is unable to relax now. No one can feel secure around him enough to be uninhibited and therefore he must always be "sober" as well. The last verse refers to what people think of him. The wispered "trust me" seems to be a cry for help. The only want of a man who is alienated by society. The video also refects my interpretation. The figure has a box heavily chained (his past indiscetions) and he can't keep it closed. |
