Natalie Merchant – Jealousy Lyrics 22 years ago
Natalie Merchant so perfectly puts jealousy into song form. The lyrics seem to be the thoughts in one's head wondering what "the other girl" is like. I love the last part. In the back of your mind you wonder how you compare to her, but you almost don't want to think it. By putting this at the end of the song, it reflects that hesitancy to ask that question. Good song.

David Gray – Please Forgive Me Lyrics 22 years ago
"Please forgive me
If I act a little strange
For I know not what I do.
Feels like lightning running through my veins
Everytime I look at you
Everytime I look at you

Help me out here
All my words are falling short
And there's so much I want to say"

It's that feeling where you want to tell the other person but you just don't know how. You start to feel like you're going crazy not being able to tell that person how you feel and then you start acting strange...or at least that's how it was for me. I love this song.

it's a horrible feeling wondering "was it just a game to you."

Oleander – I Walk Alone Lyrics 23 years ago
I never saw this as a break-up song, but now I can totally see it. I've always thought of this as an anthem song, sort of saying, "one of these days i'm not going to care what anyone says and I'm just going to be myself." Whatever the meaning, it's still a great song!

The Drops of Jupiter album is such a great break-up cd. That's all I've got to say.

Train – Something More Lyrics 23 years ago
To me this song is about a broken relationship. This guy is putting all of this effort into making the relationship work, but it's all in vain because the girl doesn't care and the relationship is beyond repair. It's in that place where both people know it's over and it's just a matter of accepting that and ending it. The girl wants something more but the guy just wants to hang on. This song is about a sort of revenge, but not in a violent sense. This whole time the guy has been trying to make the relationship work but the girl doesn't care about him anymore; she's found someone or something new. But in the end, the girl sees what an idiot she was and realizes how great the guy was and that she should have noticed sooner. And of course, the guy is on to something more. I love this song because it captures that feeling so perfectly-that feeling of wanting the other person in the relationship to appreciate you and see what an idiot they were for not, but being able to say, "It's too late, I've moved on." And the line "I lost the word and nerve and now" has this great poetic quality about it. -ChasingAStar-i think you're right, almost every Train song has an underlying meaning about a relationship, or at least on the Drops of Jupiter album.

Alice Deejay – Better Off Alone Lyrics 23 years ago
Great song! I'm going to have to disagree with you guys-everyone is better off alone, well, maybe not forever, but there are times when it's really good to be alone. I mean, really, do you have to be in a relationship all the time?

Fuel – Shimmer Lyrics 23 years ago
This song is one of my all-time favorites, definitely in the Top Five, and as someone said previously, it's one of the very few songs i can listen to over and over and over again and never get tired of it. Each time I listen to it I get something new and I think that is one of the measures of an amazing song. I think that the singer’s voice at the beginning of the song is so vulnerable and that only emphasizes the point. Later in the song, his voice is a little bit more confident, more stable, but still incredibly passionate, which only reflects the emotions behind this situation. In the end, his voice has a hint of resolution, sort of a sigh, and i think that just shows all of the energy this has taken from him and he has nothing left, so he has no choice but to let it go. This song is amazing in every aspect and the lyrics only make it better. So, this is what I get from the lyrics (sorry if i repeat what's been said):
So there are these two people. They were at one point in a relationship, but for some reason it ended. The girl calls the guy and he still isn't over her and what they had (she calls me from the cold/just when i was low). It seems like maybe she did something that caused their relationship to end (she says she's ashamed) but she wants to put that behind them and be friends (can i be a friend/we'll forget the past). Even though she might be able to do that, he's not sure he can (or maybe i'm not able). But is that her saying she's not able to forget it or him? Regardless, it's saying that even if they try to forget the past, they won't be able to, because the present is made up of all of one's past experiences. So, forgetting the past would be like forgetting who you are. I also think he doesn't trust that she just wants to be friends and he has lost some sort of trust in her that he once had (and all that she intends/and all she keeps inside isn't on the label). She must have some sort of ulterior motive, possibly getting back together. So the guy is thinking at this point that since they are there (at the point of being able to talk and communicate and possibly be friends), will they get back together (we're here and now, will we ever be again). So just them being there causes him to wonder if they'll be together again, so if they were friends he would always be wondering if it will turn into something more. There would always be that temptation to cross the line from friendship to romance. He knows that it didn't work once, so it probably won’t work again (all that shimmers in this world is sure to fade/away again). He has his doubts and rightfully so. Now the girl has this image of reality that’s all fun and pure and good, but it isn’t the true reality. She sort of delusional, in that, she’s allowing herself to believe what can’t possibly be true (she dreams a champagne dream…reality escapes her). I’m a little confused about the part that goes “she says that love is for fools that fall behind.” She could be saying that you don’t need love or that everything will be okay as long as you don’t let yourself fall in love. The guy doesn’t know if he buys into that (I’m somewhere between). It seems like he falls in love too quickly and too easily (never really know/a killer from a savior/’til I break at the bend) and his love blinds him. He so wants to be in love, but he’s letting too much of his heart and not enough of his head make his decisions. It’s only when he gets hurt that he can see the truth. This part sort of relates back to the first verse where it goes “and all that she intends/and all she keeps inside isn’t on the label.” All that isn’t apparent is what he sees after he gets hurt. He’s afraid that he’ll fall for her again and then he won’t be able to see what’s beyond “the label.” Then he realizes that even if it could work, even if they could be friends, or try the relationship again, too much has happened, which has created a barrier between them (it’s too far away for me to hold). He knows that the past cannot be fully forgotten. So he knows that he must stop worrying about it and just move on (guess I’ll let it go…). I think that ellipsis after the last line might imply that he’s not really going to let it go. Sure, he’s going to try and he really wants to, but there will still be these unanswered questions and thoughts in the back of his mind second-guessing his decision. In other words, it could be saying that even when you earnestly want to move on, there will still be a part of you that won’t let you, a part of you that will be there with memories and from those, questions.

30 Seconds to Mars – Capricorn (A Brand New Name) Lyrics 23 years ago
I think this song has incredible dynamics. I love the way the part that begins with "so i run..." the second to last time, sounds.

I'm not exactly sure what this song means, but i think it has something to do with coming across as you intended. In other words, it's hard to say what you mean and have people understand that as well. I think the person in song is just so tired of being misunderstood and coming across as unclear. It might also be saying that nobody can ever come across completely clear and the closest you can get is still a little unclear. This is just what I've got from this song, but i could be wrong...
