Ani DiFranco – Out of Habit Lyrics 23 years ago
She starts and ends with the theme as she does in "32 flavors" and probably does in some other songs.

The butter melts because that's what it does and not only because the toast is warm.

The waitress and the man play out a scene they've played out many times before because it's their habit and routine.

She watches the sun stumble home to the sky as it does every morning. The coffee she drinks loses it's potency, as a stimulant, as she habitually drinks it and therefore it becomes as "water dressed in brown."

-For some reason the coffee line sticks out. I think that she noticed how she habitually drank coffee and found her inspiration in that.--beautiful

The "beautiful but boring" guy that visits her could be any regular guy that finds her attractive. This is where the song gets interesting. She says she doesn't care a lot and she plays. She plays out of habit, however she does tell him to not come any closer. I think this is where she breaks free of habit.

Her cunt is built like a wound that won't heal. This is a very powerful line and expresses, very directly, how she now feels about sex. I'm guessing that she used to have sex habitually and is tired of the regular old lay.

Then she tries to explain to this regular joe that there is more to living than sex. In three letters, art. And art doesn't have a definition. And she realizes that he's not actually comprehending the meaning behind what she's trying to say.

So she decides to stop playing for him. She wants him to show what he can do (to play for her), what sort of art he can create. She then reminisces about the way it used to be when she was just like the regular girl who then tryed something new and came up with something dazzling and beautiful, mainly her music. Therefore "fuck this time and place".

God this song is so depressing. But it really hits home and if you sit and ponder it for a little while you might find that if you try something new and just give it a shot you'll find your own personal style of "art."

Ani DiFranco – 32 Flavors Lyrics 23 years ago
"cause someday you're going to get hungry
and eat most of the words you just said"

This is what she says at the beginning. (the end of the 1st verse)

"cause someday you might find you're starving
and eating all of the words you said"

This is how it's changed at the end of the song. In the beginning you'll only be hungry and eat most of the words but you'll end up starving and eating all of them: after you've seen all the things women can do. They are not perfect; they have their flaws as we all do. Men and women are not the same. The differences that seperate us make for a wholesome, beautiful, natural contrast.

I just wanted to point out what the point of the song is to me and I wholeheartedly agree.

"you penetrate me
and my little pink heart
is on its little brown raft
floating out to sea"

This part always struck me as a metaphor for sex.

The Goo Goo Dolls – Acoustic #3 Lyrics 23 years ago
I think punkynoisething hinted at it, but I believe that this song is sung in third person about Jonny's life, thoughts and inner feelings and such.

I think it all culminates in the last stanza if I can call it that. I think he's talking about how he does things that differ from the way he thinks. He can see through himself when he's faced with tough situations and he sees that his actions don't follow his true thoughts. He ends up going against his original intentions.

I feel the same way sometimes with homework. This is probably not what Jonny was talking about but this is how I relate. I'll think to myself, I know that if I get this done now while I have some time then I won't have to worry about it later. Then it never gets done because I procrastinate. I know this is a cheesy example but that's just the way I see this song. I relate it to procrastination.

Tenacious D – Wonderboy Lyrics 23 years ago
Here's my interpretation of the hidden meanings behind this song:

"Not much to say when you're high above the mucky-muck." I believe this line is symbolic of heaven and how boring it can be up there looking down at the poor schmucks left on Earth (the mucky muck)

The character Wonderboy could be seen as a Jesus figure with his archrival Young Nastyman being Satan. "the power to kill a yak from 200 yards away" - That's pretty evil in my opinion.

Of course those characters COULD be seen as Jesus and Satan however I believe that they are more superhero representations of the actual band members themselves. No shit.

"Take my hand! Young Nastyman, and we'll fly!"
Concrete proof that JB sees himself as Wonderboy and that he sees KG as Young Nastyman.

"Wonderboy, what is the secret of your power?"
In my humble opinion, JB is asking his alter ego (Wonderboy) where he gets his strength from. JB probably has self-esteem issues and/or trouble with depression. That's why he's created this alter ego Wonderboy so that he has someone to talk to and confide personal things to as well as to have someone to lean on. From this song its obvious that JB does not consider KG to be a good friend.

On a side note, I think that the roles should be switched around. KG should be Wonderboy because he is a very proficient guitarist who could rock the fuck out of most famous guitarists nowadays. And JB should be Young Nastyman because, honestly, that guy is one of the fucking nastiest dudes on the face of the planet. He reminds me of some guy that doesn't shower so that he can save money to buy booze. He also earns this title by way of some of his other songs. Mainly, "Fuck her softly."

"Bring out your broadsword. There's the hydra. Slice his throat!"
Is it just me or does this say D&D all over it?

"scroat."
Need I explain this one? This is up there on the list of the funniest words ever spoken.

That concludes my interpretation. I hope that I've helped clear up some of the misconceptions about this song.

PS: The real point of this comment is that this site is about interpreting the meaning behind songs and not about whether a song deserves merit or not. No one cares if you think a song is great or if it sucks ass. Honestly. I don't. I would love to hear how other people interpret some of my favorite songs. I'm always open to new ideas.

PPS: If you believe in any of the bull shit that I've mentioned above the PS then I think you should get psyciatric help immediatly.
