I don't think that there is too much symbolism in this one. It's just a feel good song where the narrator gives props to none other than American music and remembers his high school years... wanting girls but them being just out of his reach, partying too much, being rejected, being an oddball. I can relate |

I understand what you guys are trying to say but i disagree. I think that it was written as a warning to over-sensitive girls. It's showing how ridiculous some relationships are and emphasizing the fact that if you stick with someone who keeps hurting you, they'll keep doing it. The whole emo section in the beginning is saying that asshole guys have feelings too, but that doesnt mean they'll treat you any better |

| The Ataris – Butterfly Lyrics

At first I really thought that it was just a simple song about how you feel when you mistakingly kill a pet (I know the feeling). It reminds me of the movie Jack. On a personal note, I listened to it after I broke up with my boyfriend and it took on a whole new meaning. The butterfly is obviously a girlfriend. He thinks that the relationship is wonderful until he has a reality check and realizes that by loving his interest he has smothered her. Maybe he did something without thinking of how she would feel because he sees her as a perfect entity and ended up hurting her. Now he feels bad because he didnt do it on purpose. His guilty feelings don't go away quickly because there is always something present to remind him of his mistakes. Then he comes to terms with the fact that this girl is wonderful, however just as fragile as anyone else. |
