Nine Inch Nails – Metal Lyrics 23 years ago
I love this song, of course, the real props go out to Gary Numan, but I think Trent captivates it wonderfully in this piece. The unreleased studio version is excellent too, albeit a bit harder. This is one of my favorite songs to listen to.

Marilyn Manson – Rock Is Dead Lyrics 23 years ago
I agree to the this-song-kicks-Corgan-in-the-balls premise, and Reznors Manson-bashing Starfuckers works too. Ironically enough, this was like the second-most mainstream song of MA. I think its kinda funny that although Starfuckers was meant to be a slap in Manson's face, Manson is actually in the video for it

Nine Inch Nails – Something I Can Never Have Lyrics 23 years ago
man, this song is the shit, thats all there is to it. As for you breakup people, there's other songs that comply flawlessly with painful breakups, but this is probably the strongest, although I found myself listening to "Somewhat Damaged" quite a bit in my breakup, I definitely got my share of this song, Terrible Lie, No You Don't, Eraser, That's What I Get, and strangely enough, Happiness in Slavery. All in all, this song fucking ROCKS

Nine Inch Nails – No, You Don't Lyrics 23 years ago
That's actually a really good insight, I never looked at this song in that light. Actually, this is one of the harder NIN songs to read, I think, but it's really good listening! I can't help but think of a succubus every time I hear this song though, the way the person in the song is referred to reminds me of a succubus....just my thought

Nine Inch Nails – Hurt Lyrics 23 years ago
Hmm, I haven't seen anything about this on this thread yet, but...I think this may have been written at about the same time Trent's grandmother died, which would explain the need to inflict injury some interpret this song to project, because it was Trents grandparents who'd raised him. Just sparking another conversation topic...

I think this is one of the deepest songs ever. I know it's the deepest i've had the privelege of listening to. I think its really interesting how so many views can be gathered from this song, all of which fit in some abstract way. To me, this song is nothing but pure, unadulterated despair. His tone is so genuine. After so many hardships, heartbreaks, he questions his ability to feel, period. He's endured s much, its no surprise to me that the only thing thats real to him is pain. I don't necessarily believe it's self-inflicted, though. The line "i hurt myself today" complies with the folowing lines to just strengthens the air of despair. As much as I worship the guy, he HAS had a history of drug abuse. And, "the old familiar sting" signifies it's been a regular activity, but that is the ONLY line that refers to drug use, in my opinion. He puts it in there to show that all the highs in the world never drowned out his true anguish, no matter how hard he tried to "kill it all away", he remembered everything. The first half of the chorus, "what have I become, my sweetest friend? Everyone I know, goes away in the end." shows his vulnerability, his despair, by questioning the listener. The empire of dirt shows what he thinks of all he currently has, due to his outlook on life. He thinks absolutely nothing of himself, he cant do anything right, he'll let you down, he'll make you hurt. The crown of shit demonstrates his unstable mentality, depression, his "messed up head", which would happen to anyone who's went through his situation. Full of broken thoughts he cannot repair kinda explains itself in conjunction with the crown of shit.
The stains of time refer to all his lost friends, family, loved ones, throughout the years, which eventually led to his feelings dissapearing. You are someone else, like you carried on with your life, you went forward, you've changed with time, while i stayed here, unable to go forward, unable to carry on.
Finally, the ending. If i could start again, a million miles away. I would keep myself, I would find a way. Like someone else said, we'd all love to start again, fresh slate, where no one knew us. Granted, that wouldn't bring back all he's lost over time, but it shows determination to find a way, to keep himself. I also think maybe the million miles away would be because he'd need to be so so far away from where all the memories of whats caused his pain are. Anyway, thats my incredibly long winded interpretation :) I agree with the fact that TDS is an entire story, but Hurt is most definitely the most powerful installment, and his emotion is so genuine that you don't really NEED to listen to the rest of it to feel what he intended. Sure, it makes a bigger impact if you do listen to the rest of the CD/story, but it isnt a necessity. Heh, if you can't tell, i'm a HUUUGE NIN freak :) ANy other huge NIN freaks wanna chat, my AOL name is supermegasteve, imagine that. And to all you cutters, seriously, there are better ways about that. Trust me, nothing good can come from that. I used to do that kinda stuff years ago, and all i got left is a few scars and a deep feeling of stupidity to show for it now; the best thing to do is find someone who knows what you're going through, someone who's been there. Fuck those shrinks, they may think they know what its all about because of field training, but talking to someone who can relate, and found ways to get through it, works hella better.

Nine Inch Nails – Somewhat Damaged Lyrics 23 years ago
This song is most likely my favorite off The Fragile. I gained the utmost respect for it after a breakup, (which, in case none have noticed, Nine Inch Nails are, in my experience, the BEST songs for bad breakups, theres always a song that fits it PERFECTLY, Something I Can Never Have, Thats What I Get, Somewhat Damaged, Terrible Lie, the list goes on...) Actually, most around here absolutely hated The Fragile, but I, being an avid Reznor worshipper, bought it ASAP and followed it through, and I loved it. Most say it "wasn't hard enough", but I'd say this song fits that bill rather well. Not to mention, as DeathRockBoy said, it non-coincidentially heads of the album, and sets the mood flawlessly. Although, if you look at each side individually, as opposed to a whole, it seems like the left tracks, headed with this song, seemingly gets gradually calmer and calmer, perhaps symbolic of Trent's abandonment of infuriation to a hopeless, futile, state of giving up, hence the potential allusion to death, or "the end", joining with the sea and the sky, presented in "La Mer". I used to have a well-thought out theory, I actually researched and wrote my senior paper on Trent Reznor, and gained a lot of respect for him, but it's been almost two years and I can't remember much of it. Ah well, this song still kicks mega ass!

I agree whole heartedly, this song never fails to put me to sleep. And it builds up so well to the great below, which is one of my favorite tracks on the fragile.

The Rabbit Joint – Legend Of Zelda Lyrics 23 years ago
lol, this is kinda funny. YES THIS IS SOAD AND IF YOU DON'T THINK SO I SHALL UNJUSTIFIABLY INSULT YOUR SEXUAL PREFERENCES, MORAL VALUES, INTELLIGENCE AND/OR INCESTUAL RELATIONSHIPS WITH FAMILY MEMBERS, POSSIBLY OF THE SAME GENDER! Honestly though, I don't know/care if it's SOAD, the song's awesome and there's this sweet Slayers anime fan made video that goes along with that song floating around kazaa somewhere...at least there was some time back when I got it. lmao, SOAD did Edgecrusher? And Bled for Days? Thats nice, goes to show you MP3 naming reliablity is shot to shit. And March of the Fuckheads? Come ON, who in the nine hells could mistake Trent for Serj? Being a devout Zelda fanatic through majora's mask, of course I found a deep respect for this song, whether it was SOAD done or not. And, not pointing any fingers or anything, but people who get their kicks partaking in talking about "fucking so-and-so's sister in the ass" and "you're no true fan of such and such if you think so" need to get down from their high-and-mighty ego trips, we're all human, we all make mistakes, and this is the most insignificant thing to write 20-post arguments containing the word "fuck" more than the south park movie about. I honestly thought it SOUNDS a lot like SOAD, but I don't really listen to any bands with Armenian vocalists to base an accent comparison on. And, just for the record, the whole loveline thing COULD possibly be discredited because, as was previously stated, Nintendo would sue the everloving fuck out of them if they publicly stated doing a song with Zelda characters without permission. Well, whoever the hell wrote this song, I'm glad they did, I really got a kick outta it.
