I saw Man Man play live in Austin a few weekends ago, and they as usual started with this song.
They had the Extraordinaires come up with them and chant it behind them, which was pretty amazing. Usually when this song is played live they jump in Engwish Bwudd but at the concert they busted out a new song. I talked to Honus Honus after the show and he said the new album will hopefully be out in March.
Anyway, this song is so straightforward and powerful. It reminds me of "Ocean Breathes Salty" by Modest Mouse. Mostly because it deals with the concept of someone who doesn't truly value what they have (life/"light"). |

I think the grey ice water refers to water from the glaciers. As the glaciers melt, the silt from the glacier changes the color of the water to a milky grey color. Just more imagery of Alaska and its isolation.

Now, I've heard someone mention how Pinback likes to pick random historical places or names to name their songs. Maybe this one is no different. Clemenceau was the leader of France during WWI. The only thing I can sense that would cause some kind of depression or shame by looking at this guy's wiki is this:
As a framer of the postwar Treaty of Versailles, he opposed leniency toward Germany after WWI. Since most people believe the effects of his decision contributed to the events that lead to World War II, Clemenceau's historical reputation can be argued to have suffered as a result.
Face it: because of this man's decision to be too hard on Germany in WWI, WWII began even more swiftly and deadly.
Anywho, this song is definitely one of the most depressing I have ever heard. I listen to it whenever I feel down. |

anyway. i agree mostly with redlight. It just sounds like a break up song to me..and i know that whenever things dont work out with someone i loved i'll think that it will haunt them every day like it had been doing to me. at the very least its like almost hoping that the other person has any idea at all about what you are going through feeling this hurt. I think rivers did a great job with this song especially because he wrote it entirely on piano.. |

man, when i met the lead singer i shouldve asked him what he thought about this song. i was freaking out so much that i couldnt even think straight though when i realized it was him, and we just talked about trying to find something for him to sign for me, haha. anyway, this song is so meaningful and it is their best in my opinion..who cares that its a different kind of chevelle, it shows so much emotion. |

ok, this song obviously has many different meanings. To all of you saying that what maynard says on the dvd is what it really is, that isn't necessarily true. He has been quoted as saying "It's about being overlooked." and to many it is that simple. Like he explains on the dvd, it's about the people in the world that instead of adding to the energy of the world, they just take it for themselves and are like human parasites, or barnacles as he says. Even more, he wrote those beautiful paragraphs about finding the elusive mountain gorilla, and related it to that. These all work out as meanings for the song, and that is one of the many reasons i like it so much. Even billy talks about how this song helped them create the perfect circle logo, about not looking or passing over the design of the two perfect circles hidden inside the insignia. anyway, this song is amazing and has easily changed my life. |

this song was written when rivers was in harvard. there, he saw this girl in one of his classes that he fell for. he then realized that even though he is a rockstar (remember, this is after the huge success of buddy holly and the sweater song) he still can't just get any girl he wants. he isnt superhuman or something, like you'd almost naturally think. as if..things still arent necessarilly easier for him just because he was famous. so, he wrote this song to express what he felt about this girl, as is shown when he sings "how stupid is it? can't talk about it, gotta sing about it and make a record of my heart" cio cio san is a character in the play madame butterfly. that play is about a sailor who goes to japan, makes a japanese woman fall in love with him, she gets pregnant then he leaves...but not before saying "ill be back when the robins make their nest" and unfortunately he never comes back. |

this epic song chronicles the character Jesus of Suburbia (who apparently is this guy who lives in a suburban area that i guess thinks he is pretty special, i guess like teenagers when they are "on top of the world") so throughout the song he decides to get out of his town and move to the big city. there, he gets hit by the desolation of being alone in the world (boulevard of broken dreams) and then meets st. jimmy, who gets him into trouble and drugs. he also meets a girl known only as whatshername, and in the end has to decide who he should kind of follow, ie which lifestyle he should do. in the end, he decides to go with his own. |

i think when he says "i never noticed, how lovely were the aliens" he means that throughout his life he never noticed anything that was out of the ordinary, ie aliens. to him, finally noticing and seeing the stranger and more out there things in life is such a "lovely" thing. the whole "moving on" over and over part is probably about scott trying to get off of drugs and so many other things and that now is the time to truly move on after all the addiction. |

I actually thought this was about advertising. Like how he says "sell me down the river" over and over as well as the "what i wanted is what i wanted" and all that. it seems even more evident with the "you read the words and it sells you life, they sell their words, but its all a lie" saying that false advertising is so blatant in our world. i cant believe no one has written anything about this song. its an old song rivers did back in the day, before weez came to be. ive heard some people talk about how ironic it is talking about being frozen and all that, "just like walt disney" who is cryogenically (sp?) frozen...thats pretty odd. the words are depressing and sad, yet the music is very upbeat and happy sounding. ive always thought the song was about suicide and all, and that the happy music was basically like covering up the hurt and anger by making everything seem alright. either way a great song. |

It's funny, i can relate to this song perfectly. every single word is exactly familiar to me. I actually had the dream he describes, then after going through the various events that proved the experience was "Only In Dreams". Actually, it reminds me of two girls: the first one i had this dream about, and the second, i liked for about a year, and just never got the nerve to tell, of course, until i found out she was moving across the world. To me, this song is for people that love someone, but know that if a relationship or anything ever happened then it would probably ruin everything. the line "How long before we learn to let love fly away?" tells that, and also "all the times we broke our hearts despite ourselves". basically the whole song just explains that point. I think its a great song, and I hope it becomes a B-side. |
