Semisonic – Closing Time Lyrics 21 years ago
I remember seeing Semisonic on VH1 back when this song came out 5 or 6 years ago.. there was some sort of feature on the music video and one of the band members explained that the song was about closing time at a bar...

"Every new beginning comes from some other beginning's end."

Something is ending, but something else could also be beginning. I've listened to a lot of Semisonic's songs.. and they don't seem to have huge hidden layers of meaning.. so I have trouble seeing how this song could be about pregnancy, birth or graduation. Granted, you can relate those and find parallels in this song; but you could also say that Edgar Allen Poe's poem "The Raven" was about his gambling problem.

Simon and Garfunkel – Mrs. Robinson Lyrics 21 years ago
Actually, I read a bio of Simon and Garfunkel, and they were asked by the producers of The Graduate to make some songs for it.. one of the songs was "Mrs. Robinson," but an incomplete version.. the complete version you see here was released after The Graduate was out and successful..
"Mrs. Robinson" wasn't written directly to the movie.. but, if it makes any difference, it was at least meant to refer to the older woman--whose name is Mrs. Robinson--with whom Ben has an affair. It's a loveless affair.. Ben, a recent college grad who believes he has no future, is trying to search for meaning in the world and he has an affair with Mrs. Robinson because it gives him something to do. Mr. Robinson is Ben's father's business partner, and Ben's father pushes Ben to date the Robinsons' daughter Elaine, against the wishes of Mrs. Robinson. Hell hath no fury like a woman scorned, and when Ben falls in love with Elaine, Mrs. Robinson unleashes her wrath...
In any case, I'm no expert... but the movie and the song are both brilliant. Scenes and ideas from The Graduate have been copied and remade in countless movies, television shows and other various productions; they say sometimes that all (or at least most) of the best ideas have already been taken

Shakira – Objection (Tango) Lyrics 22 years ago
Hey, Emo, I've seen you post other places about your hate of pop music, as well as other places about how people shouldn't diss emo music. In my humble opinion (and I think you're cool so I really do NOT mean to diss you here) I think you should let off a little. Some pop artists actually do write their own music, or at least collaborate. After all, should it really matter who wrote the song as long as the message is getting across?

I don't like a lot of Britney Spears's music because I don't believe in her shameless sexual propaganda, not because she doesn't write the shameless sexual propaganda. Mariah Carey IS a pop star, and she wrote her own music (well, not so much all her music anymore, but she used to write all the lyrics herself).

I'd be flattered if a song I wrote was sung by Christina Aguilera or one of those other pop princesses--I may not have the looks to be able to send out my message, but the lyrics are my intellectual property. It's not like Britney is standing up there telling everyone, "Look at these songs I wrote all by myself. I'm a lyrical genius!"

Anyway, that's my take.. yay!

P.S. LOL @ the yodeling.. great stuff ;-)
