this man knows that he has his faults, he is not like everybody else. he has come to the conclusion that he is crazy, nervous, unfashionable, etc. but he is himself, and as long as he remains a free spirit, he can accept it. |

nobody seems to understand this man's problem. the doctor seems to comprehend only what he reads in books, the mother gives no attention, and the preacher feels that his problem is related to his distant relationship with god. none of them bother to listen and open their minds to him, but base their conclusions solely on what they know |

awesome summary, ballzofsno!
it seems that the character in this song feels that there is something wrong with him. paranoia means having the facts, which indicates to me that he has had someone close to him leave him or ignore him. perhaps this has led to the conclusion that his personality was intimidating or unstable. therefore, he has become distant and protective of his emotions so as not to let the mistake happen again. it seems that he wants to open up to his lover, but he is afraid that she would leave him as well |

the man in this song is attempting to prove to his "audience" that his first impression may seem alarming, but before making judgements, he wants the people to explore what molded him into what he is. |

everything that we have experienced in our lives has shaped who we are.
many of you may disagree with me, but before this song (well, one with lyrics that is) is brain damage. the mental health system suffocated the man's spirit with medication and whatnot. the sights, sounds, experiences that shaped him have been erased with drugs/lobotomy/ etc. the moon, in my opinion, is whatever erased the determining factors in who he was. when you destroy your roots, you dont know who you are. everything under the sun is in tune, but the sun is eclipsed by the moon. |

this song portrays anxiety in a very colourful way. "lines converging where you stand" "ravens all are watching" "you hear the thunder of the train and suddenly it strikes you that youre moving into range"
when one has anxiety, he feels as though the whole world's focus is on himself alone and he cannot escape. the woman in this song must have felt that the only way she could escape was to indulge in drugs or alcohol in order to feel more relaxed, to forget. |

the mental health system is a disgrace. give the crazy people some medication to shut them up, and just hide the problem. what the staff does not realize, is that they are only covering up the physical symptoms. have a hole in the wall? put a picture frame over it. roger waters seems to share my view on this, portraying the faults of this system with his ever present angst and sarcasm. way to go roger! |

the character is convincing himself that he can live without whatever he has sought throughout his life. love, and help.
when he says "i have seen the writings on the wall" he is saying that he knows the whole deal. the medication doesnt work, perhaps it makes the situation worse, and it seems that whoever hes loved has left him. he knows how it is. and he is denying his own need for such things. sour grapes |

personally, i believe this song describes a panic attack. the man is driving down the road at sunset. he reminisces, and wonders, thinks about where hes going from here emotionally. then, the panic sets in. (like the moment when the brakes lock, and you slide towards the big truck, you stretch the frozen moments with your fear). as many people feel when they have a panic attack, they feel that they are either going to die, or go insane.he has no recourse to the law anymore. most panic attacks last but a few minutes, but it seems like forever. as hes coming down off of it, he has reminded himself that perhaps he is insane or crazy, but it is not a crime. this is the way he is. |
