Crimson was NOT a disappointment... Lyrically speaking Crimson contained some of Matt Skiba's best efforts. This album is a bit dumbed-down lyrically speaking but has a more upbeat and catchy sound than Crimson had.
Alkaline Trio may have overestimated the intelligence of a lot of their fanbase with Crimson... I also think they've started to realize that writing clever lyrics that are meaningful isn't a recipe for success because 95% of the general public is too retarded to understand metaphors. |

The fact is, the story of the West Memphis Three makes me sick to my stomach. It's an UNBELIEVABLE miscarriage of justice. In fact, I am embarassed that this kind of thing could happen in the country in which I live.
There is NO - NONE, NADA, ZERO, ZILCH - evidence that even links these 3 men to the crime. None. Nothing. Nothing at all.
That is what this song is about and I think it's wonderful that Alkaline Trio is attempting to do their part to remedy this GROSS miscarriage of justice.
I just want to note that only one of the boys was into metal... They weren't so much convicted based on their interests, but simply because the WMPD is incompetent and couldn't find any other suspects.
In fact, there was another possible suspect that they - for all intents and purposes - simply ignored. A black man covered in huge amounts of fresh blood and mud was seen walking into a restaurant in the area the night of the murders. The employees at the restaurant had to use a hose to clean the bathroom becuase of the sheer amount of blood and filth this guy tracked in. The employees called the police... ONE officer reported to the restaurant... And get this: SHE DIDN'T EVEN ENTER THE F'ING PLACE. She went through the drive through.

The meaning of this song seems pretty obvious to me... That's one great thing about DC... The lyrics are easy to figure out, yet still endearing...
This seems to be about a relationship of pretty decent length... He mentions "So much for all the promises you made..." We all know how people often make promises in a relationship when it's at its peak that we really shouldn't make... "I'll stay with you forever, I promise..." "I'll never hurt you, I promise..."
Chris, whether intentional or not, takes note of the deterioration of virtue in our society... No one values their word anymore. It used to be that honor was something someone cherished... It was admirable to be honest and virtuous. Now it seems as though lies roll off people's tongue's as if they were nothing... Promises are broken with no fear of loss of honor.
It's difficult to trust people in this world. Chris points that out in nearly every song he has written. This particular song is a little more straightforward than others, however.
We all have been in this situation... You are with someone for a while... They seem to be everything you want them to be - and that's their plan. They try to be everything you want them to be. Because in reality, no one will be everything you want them to be. Relationships are built on compromise and sacrifice. If you find someone that always says and does the right thing, chances are they're faking it.
The frustration of getting to know someone and being under the impression that you know them well just to have them eventually show you a side you've never seen before once they get tired of the relationship is bordering on maddening.
Promises are made... And they're broken... And there are no consequences... The one breaking the promises goes on his or her merry way while the one that was betrayed is left to fend to him or her self. It's a sad and seemingly hopeless situation to be in.
I guess the point is... People... Think before you give your word. A promise should be binding. Not by law or by societal norms, but within yourself. Your own sense of virtue should restrict you from breaking a promise that you voluntarily made. If you have any doubt in your mind that you can and will keep your word, then don't make the promise.
Because the pain is close to unbearable when you're on the short end of it. |

Dude, who are you to talk about shitty attempts at emo when you have Bright Eyes in your name? Good Charlotte is trash, but at least it's fun trash... At least you can sing along to it without wanting to hang yourself. I can listen to Bright Eyes for about 10 minutes before I want to jump out the window to end my misery. It's the same with Dashboard Confessional... I don't see how you can come on here and pass judgement on bands like New Found Glroy and Good Charlotte when you not only listen to, but obviously hold in high enough regard to make them your screen name, a band that, while a good band in their own right, are the epitome of whiny emo music. I actually just went through something like this... I met this girl... and things were fine for a while... Then she told me that she had a really bad experience with her ex... They had sex and she got pregnant and he decided to be a prick and tell her that he would never love it and that it should die... So she had an abortion, which went against her beliefs... I am in love with this girl, madly in love... And I told her, but she's so afraid of guys now that she can't let me in... So... This is an incredibly moving and energetic song live... I've seen Alkaline Trio 3 times live, and all three I was pressed against the stage... I saw them at Club 797 in Latham, New York and me and 4 of my friends went up on stage and sang Radio with the band and shook their hands and talked with them for a while... It was the BEST concert ever. I'll always remember the feeling at Warped Tour in Boston... With about 5000-6000 people crammed in a space that was made for 2500-3000... All screaming their lungs out to this song... It was incredible... The song is obviously about shitty relationships that end badly... |
