This song tells the story of a girl whose family was toxic and abusive. When people questioned her about her family, she would claim to be an orphan, feeling ashamed of their actions. To cope with her pain, she turned to drugs and kept her struggles hidden from others to avoid being judged or shamed. She smiled when the pain came to hide it from everyone. She sought solace in her religious beliefs, engaging in ritualistic songs and dances, and spoke to angels for comfort. Although she carried a cross representing Jesus, she didn’t truly know him yet; she simply sought protection. To conceal her tears, pain, and shame, she painted her eyes dark. She styled her hair like a boy's to fit in with the boys she spent most of her life with in the streets. She claims to speak to angels because she was seeking God in her pain.
