Back when this initially released, I heard it played on KSHE radio and I'm pretty sure they were interviewing at least one of the band members who called it a "Vampire Love Song." Basically, this is what I surmise from my memory of that interview: Vampires emerging only at night to dance among the crumbled remnants of human civilization (which they've outlasted). Their eternal love making them reckless—lost in the moment, risking sunrise and turning to dust ("It doesn't matter if we turn to dust; turn and turn and turn we must!"). "It's all done with mirrors, have no fears" → a clever nod to the classic vampire myth that they cast no reflection. The "tears" that used to be there (perhaps from a mortal life or lost humanity) are now invisible, like the vampires themselves in a mirror. The post-apocalyptic imagery (sky and sand where mountains used to be, skulls rotting in flesh, marble statues outlasting the living) fits perfectly with a world where vampires are the last ones standing, partying in the wreckage while humanity is long gone. |
