Pretty sure it’s an apology and an admission that he built a persona that he could not be - and that he realized he didn’t want to be - while doing things he should not and neglecting things he should have done. Thus he’s revealing a truth even stranger that the fact that the person he wronged still bears him sympathy. This is one of two songs guaranteed to bring tears to my eyes because it’s ultimately about losing what you most value because you were busy chasing something that ultimately means little. (The other is ‘Dog and Butterfly’ - breaks my heart to think of people who can never be what they want and can never understand why, so they go through life with a smile hiding a broken heart.) | |
