Squeeze – Vanity Fair Lyrics 19 days ago
As a New Yorker I had pull out my English to English dictionary for this one as is typical of a Squeeze song. I now know what a pac o mac and coconut shy is.
This song is a beautiful tale of a young woman who is delusional regarding her standing in the world. She dreams of being part of high society but is lower middle class pulling pints in pubs and desiring relationships with cab drivers to ease her loneliness. The beautiful orchestration, produced by Elvis Costello, gives the listener great sympathy for the subject of the song. A crowning achievement for Squeeze, it can be favorably compared to Eleanor Rigby except even closer to the kitchen sink drama.
