The Rural Alberta Advantage – Brother Lyrics 1 month ago
I know this is not the intended meaning behind this song but as a veteran it has always reminded me.of the language used by veterans (brothers in arms) when supporting each other through depression and ptsd.
"Brother, my brother
We can hold it all together"
This felt to me like one veteran trying desperately to help another.

The references to "the darkness" felt to me like a metaphor for the depression that has driven so many veterans to self harm.and even suicide.

"And I heard your final cry
Where you sleep tonight
I guess that's all you do"

When a veteran takes their own life the entire support network feels the loss. These lines reminded me of how that feels.

"There's a dream I had
Where somebody watched out for me and you
And in the end of life
There was no one there for me and you."

This line hits hard for me. It very much evokes the sense of abandonment and betrayal that many veterans feel after they come home from war.

Again, I know this is not the intended meaning of this song but the lyrics are very powerful and the themes of loss and hopelessness unfortunately fit very well with veterans issues.
