| As someone who's struggled with it, I think this song is about addiction and its parallels with life. The desire to feel life as you did when you were young "when you were young and your excitement showed". How when you first discover something that can emulate that feeling its easy to become reliant on it "walking free, come with me, far away, everyday" . I love this song as to me it reflects the eventual realisation of addiction that nothing can make you feel that high forever "whatever goes up must come down" just like life, you always search for new goals only to feel that same strange sense of disappointment and emptiness once you achieve them (just like the feeling you eventually get from addiction) "forever reaching for a goal, forever fading black". To me this is very much the experience of addiction and life, realising why that addiction exists or the desire to achive new goals in life, to feel alive. The ending to me feels so much like that 'chasing the dragon' experience, which in a way life feels very much like. It sounds like that experience of wanting to stay forever but realising that you can't. In my opinion this song is a masterpiece and has helped me though some very dark times. | |
