Bruce wrote this after spotting some young girls (around 15 years old) smoking weed in the crowd of a beach boys show, which made him wonder what he thought about at their age. It is an idealised, picture perfect life created by the brain of a teenager, innocent and hopeful. That's where the 1957 part of the title (that is not included on here for some reason) comes in, that is the year Bruce turned 15. |

I see this one as a feeling of uselessness in a relationship, the pain of not being able to cheer up the one person you love the most, and guilt the speaker feels for not being able to do so. The two get along great when the speaker's partner is in high spirits, but the speaker knows that this happiness is fleeting, hence their love / connection being "almost true". They almost get along, things almost work. |
