This song is deeply erotic and sensual, the first chords with whisper create this tense 'noir' atmosphere. For me it's about passion, obsession which happened all of a sudden, and danger when sth has gone out of control (yes, it has hitchcock connotations, but I hear sth like 'Last tango in Paris" where she kills him and makes up this story where he's just a total stranger who wanted to rape her so she had to kill him). Maybe she gave up this love fearing it could ruin her life and creates this story to protect her (it was just a dream, nothing real), maybe it's just two secret lovers imagining they're characters in a noir movie. The moment I heard this song I've always pictured 'a sensual dance' scene in a movie (they are drunk, neon-lit motel room, she crawls on her fours to him in this sparkling emerald dressing gown, saying sth like 'Now I'm going to seduce you', he lifts her up and this strange dance begins, their faces very close, almost touching). So for me it's more about this hypnotic yearning, this perfect moment of erotic blend (bodies electrified). |

I adore this song and the whole Smother album. It's tender, achingly poignant and always almost brings tears to my eyes. The song makes me live through this experience, loving someone so much and letting him go, and the steady rhythm only adds this inevitable touch as if you can't change anything. Love this mixture of sth raw, sensual and even possibly wrong on one side and poetic, spiritual and tender on the other which creates this human range in the album and the song in particular. |

I guess it's about the relationship between a woman and a younger man. She understands that he's too young and rebellious and he wants to explore the world and life and doesn't want to tie him down though she still loves him and he's too scared to leave her as he doesn't want to hurt her, so she makes up her mind herself, breaks it and lets him go. It's not about some casual fling (lines like "our hearts may break", "you were meant for me"), it's about love though doomed. Those lines are a bit confusing (So tired of life, No fairytale, So hold your fire
'Cause I need you) but I guess it applies to him not her, makes more sense this way, maybe she feels that he yearns for freedom and she wants him to save himself and be free ('So hold your fire Cause I need you'). |
