As Courtney herself has stated, the lyrics are about the personification of her depression. Reading into it further, I think it's conceptualizing the depression as an abusive lover, complete with themes of co-dependency and one's very core identity being intertwined with the depression. I think the video runs with this parallel. The title, as Courtney has stated, is inspired by Handmaid's Tale. |
